Default 1965 mustang quarter window regulator replacement?

The drivers side quarter window will not go down or up unless I push the window forward and back while cranking it? Suggestions on what is wrong and directions on how to fix?

You will have to remove the inner quarter and inspect the mechanism. There are a few things which could cause this problem. Here is a diagram of what you have.

All kinds of things could be wrong but likely its just the grease has all dried up. The window itself has 3 slides inside the vertical guides shown in the PDF; 2 at the front, one at the back. Those may well be binding in the tracks. If you want to pull the window out you have to remove the little fuzzy strips, remove the bolts at the top labeled 'A' so you can pull the tracks over enough to let the window out through the limited slot width in the body sheet metal.

Would it make sense to try something like lubriplate first before I tear into it?

Just make sure that all the components are where they belong and nothing is broken. Absolutely try to lube everything upfirst if you can get to it.

Thank you very much that will be my project tonight. If the guides are worn, what would you expect to still occur after I grease the tracks?

I had an issue where mine would get stuck and then pop out of the track and fall down. One of the little plastic guides was missing a piece and would pop out of the track. I replaced every plastic part in that assembly so that I would not have to go back into it again. Those parts are pretty low cost. It might be worth your while to do a very close inspection of them and even consider just replacing them. They are probably 45 years old! Preventative maintenance.

If I were to be cautious and just wanted to remove the window, inspect the tracks and the regulator, can you give some guide as to the order of teardown?

If you do not already have a manual for your car, now would be a good time to get one. Your local parts store will have them. It should provide pictures along with how to remove the glass. This is how Chilton's says to do it. The attachment should help you with some of the terminology.
  1. Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the quarter trim panel from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the screws retaining the seal to the lock pillar and remove the seal.
  4. Remove both of the upper stops from the quarter window.
  5. Unscrew the window guide.
  6. Remove the one screw retaining the guide lower bracket to the window.
  7. Lower the glass and disconnect the roller and regulator arm from the glass channel. Then, remove the window assembly from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the weather-stripping from the glass frame.
  9. Remove the screws retaining the four piece window frame together, then remove the frame pieces from the glass. One piece of the frame is bonded to the glass and cannot be removed. To install:
  10. Clean the glass frame and install the frame with new tape on the glass. Install the retaining screws and trim any excess tape off the window.
  11. Place the front weather strip on the glass frame and install with the retaining screw.
  12. Place the quarter window into the quarter panel and to the guide assembly.
  13. Install the three guide screws until snug.
  14. Place the clip on the regulator arm roller, and position the roller in the glass channel. Connect the roller to the window regulator.
  15. Adjust the quarter window if necessary, and tighten the guide assembly screws.
  16. Install the window upper stops and the lock pillar seal.
  17. Install the quarter trim panel and rear seat back and cushion.
