Question Insturment Cluster lighting problem

I just bought 70 Mustang coupe nice shape factory air still blows cold but the Dash lights don't work, I have changed the bulbs checked the fuses. It is weird Sometimes the blinker light will light up when I turn on the dash lights but just the driver side blinker light and none of the other instrument panel lights come on. Any ideas of what it might be

Could it be the voltage regulator or the head light switch

Did &0 models have an Insturment cluster voltage regulator Any help would be appreciated Thanx in advance

Hello. The instrument cluster voltage regulator supplies power to the gauges. It wouldn't have any effect on the lights. It sounds as if it's either the headlight switch or the circuit board behind the dash.Hope that helps.

Thanks Veronica I thought it might be the switch will find out in Am that is quickest I can get one here .. If not then I will change the voltage regulator on back of cluster. The voltage regulator on firewall was original one it was rusting out so i replaced it too. it was cheap enough.

I am now getting both blinker lights on dash though and all other lights works fine headlights, Dome light courtesy light under dash. but still no insturment lights ..

The chances are the problem is in the harness connector where the instrument panel plug is.

a. Look at connector and ensure pins are in good shape and clean...specifically look at connector pin with blue-red wire. Check for variable voltage at this pin. Connect voltmeter between blue-red wire and ground. Rotate the dash lighting control. As you rotate it the voltage should vary between 6v (dim) and 12v (bright).

b. Examine the instrument panel connector for evidence of foil burn out, replace all lamps, reconnect and re-test.

Good luck!

Jeff

I had the same problem. Seems my fuse box doesnt make good contact with the fuse in particular. So to test this u can put tin foil on each end of the fuse and put it back in. If your lights work then bam clean your fuse connections. I wouldnt recommend leaving the foil on there for any amount of time could burn your wire harness up.
