Default New Fuel Injected Engine/Tranni in 65 Mustang

What all must one do to add a new fuel injected 289, into a 1965 mustang. Would you need to replace the transmission/ drivetrain components? What about engine mounts? Also how hard would it be to add in a new 5 or 6 speed transmission. And how hard would it be to convert the rear leaf springs into rear independent suspension?

Wow. Where to start.

They don't make "new" fuel injected 289's. The 289 is a pushrod motor. The 4.6 litre (281 cubic inches) motor that comes in new mustangs is a SOHC engine, meaning no parts will interchange. The 4.6 WILL NOT FIT into any 60's Mustang without the removal of the shock towers. 5 or 6 speed tranny swaps are easy. Just buy a kit, it'll be easier than trying to piece one together. There is a company that makes an IRS retrofit kit for early 'Stangs, but it's not cheap.

A 5 liter (302) will fit however.Just use the computer, harness, etc. from a pre-95 donor car. There is plenty of info on these swaps. I just seen a 65 with a fuelie motor in it last weekend. Also the five speed will work too. The AOD is bigger than the C-4 so you may have to bump the trans tunnel. Get a Mustangs Unlimited catalog. Everything you need is in there. Mounts ,etc. Good luck!

You can make a fuel injected 289. It's the same thing as a 302, so if they have a 302 FI setup, it'll work for your 289.

Holley Pro-Jection Fuel Injection Systems may be something that will work for you. Be aware that a 5.0L has the same exterior dimensions as a 289, but on the inside they are different. So when someone says, 'it's the same thing as a 302,' that's not always true. You could replace the carb with a fuel injection system on your 289, but it may not have all the electronics as a early 90s EFI engine. I put a 5.0L/AOD in my 66 and I love it. You can put the EFI components from a 5.0L onto a 289, it has been done. But if you're going to spend the time/money to do it, I'd go all the way with total EFI, computer controlled ignition and all that. The C-4 will bolt onto the 289, or you can put a AOD trans behind it. The AOD will go right into your car, just trim the front yoke one inch.

It really just depends on your budget and goals. You can spend a bunch of dough putting a supercharged 5.0 DOHC mod motor, 6 speed, IRS, big brakes, etc. It's been done many times before. But, it's big bux and a lot of work. For the average garage guy, it's a year or more to completion.

Or, you can keep your current engine/trans, and simply add a good EFI system like Mass-Flo. Relativly inexpensive, and can be done in a week end.
