Default Problem with self adjusting brakes

I seem to be having a problem with my self adjusting brakes on my 65. I backed my car into the garage and noticed that the brakes seem to be holding the vehicle back. Jacked up the car and all four sides had tightened to the point that the wheels hardly turned. I had new brakes installed and professionally adjusted just recently. I have heard that self-adjusting brakes are tempermental. Does any one know why the brakes would adjust so much? What limits the amount of adjusting on the brakes. The garage where I had the brakes adjusted indicated that the springs needed to be replaced, would that effect the amount of adjusting. What should I do?

Thanks

Michael

Hello. When you say that you had new brakes installed, does that mean that they replaced the shoes and turned the drums only?If so,you need to pull the drums off and have a look at the brake hardware. If you can't tell what color the springs used to be then you definitely need to replace all of that stuff. You should also be able to turn the adjusters by hand after prying the lock arm off of the star wheel enough to free it.If you can't then you need to replace them. That probably sounds more expensive than it actually is.All new stuff for all four wheels is well under a hundred bucks. The only part that is completely unavailable is the front drum anti-rattle spring that goes from shoe to shoe right underneath the wheel cylinders.Keep that one because you will need to re-use it.Hope that helps.

If all four brakes are dragging then maybe the mechanic just over tightened them. Hard to believe all four malfunction at once. If it's just the rear check the park brake cable adjustment. It may not have any slack when the brake is off. The other problem I have seen is if there is no clearance between the mastercylinder and the brake pedal rod. This causes pressure to remain in the wheel cylinders. Good luck.

Default self adjusting brakes

I replaced the master cyclinder with a dual resevior could that be a problem. I didn't change the brake rod when I did it. It seems that all of the wheels have tightened, but the fronts are the tightest. I bought new springs because I know it needs it. Thanks for the ideas.
