Default Piston I.D.

All,

I am replacing my heads and cam in the 289' of my 65' Coupe. I did not rebuild the engine so I am unsure of what the crank or pistons are. Heads are off and looking at the top of the piston the following is written:

217-00-07-C
272AP .040

The piston also has four relief cut-outs on the top. I am not pulling the crank shaft or pistons out this time. Just hoping someone can give me some insight of what size/type pistons are and maybe with that info the type of crankshaft that might be in there. Thanks for your help.

Well, a 302 crank will fit in a 289 block, but the piston skirts are too short, and will not work for long. So since no one makes an aftermarket 289 crank, i think it's safe to assume you've got a factory Ford crankshaft. Your pistons are .040 oversized. Your displacement should be about 294ci. And those are TRW pistons (the 272AP number)

Crower makes an aftermarket 289 crank, but believe me, you don't wanna pay that money unless you're building an all-out drag car.
