Default 1973 302 pulley question

Hey, Im new to this forum so if I screw up on this post somehow just assume I'm an idiot. Well anyway, I have a 302 in which the pulleys dont line up just right. The timing dampener pulley and the alternator pulley line up but the water pump pulley does not. This car had a power steering pump which was useless it seems. When I replaced the timing chain and gears I put everything back on, but the pulleys didn't line up for some reason. I have tried to replace the water pump pulley a few times with no luck. I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks,
Glenn

Hello.Let me be the first to say welcome. It sounds like you have the wrong water pump.Ford made like a dozen different water pumps for various 289/302 applications, all of which would bolt right up to the timing chain cover. The main difference was how far the impellor shaft stuck out, which is what determines how the belts line up.If it was my car,I wouldn't worry about it if it's just off by a little bit.If it is off by half the width of the belt or more,I'd have to start trying to hunt down the correct water pump.Hope that helps.

Default Oops... hold on

I just realized um... yeah the same water pump used to work before I replaced the timing chain.

Hi again. Did you also swap out the timing chain cover?Or possibly you used a thicker (or thinner) gasket?

Maybe the gasket is bigger, but that shouldn't change things that much, should it?
