1966 Mustang GT Fog Lights

I believe I have a factory 1966 Mustang GT Coupe. I was wondering, when the fog light switch is moved to th eon position, are the fog lights, tail lights, and instrument cluster lights supposed to come on??

Hello. That is correct.Without an original build sheet, window sticker or some other form of concrete documentation it is virtually impossible to establish that a 65/66 car is a factory GT.There are ,however, a number of things that will establish that one is not.It must be an 'A' code or a 'K' code car.It would have to have the dual exhaust reinforcement inside the left rear frame rail.It would not have had the fender running pony, the smaller 'mustang' script or a quarter ornament,etc,etc....If these are things that you would be interested in,just ask away.:)

Hi again. You guys are too kind. :o

she also forgot to mentionm that the GT cars all have manual disc brakes and that the stock dual exhaust exists the car through the rear valance. There is ONE way to see if the car is a factory GT without the buildsheet...As veronica said, there is an extra exhaust bracket on the drivers side. Above the exhaust is a threaded hole that was used as a tie-down for the cars while in transit. the bolt used to hold the car down peirced one peice of metal making a deeper hole. On a factory GT, the hole was not assesable easily, and this hold down mounting point was not used.

Hi again.:)There is actually a list of stuff that you'll see on a factory GT that isn't on a non-GT.Unfortunately,most of it is bolt-on stuff. The fact that the car has front discs hanging on it right now in no way implies that they've always been there.Although there are some little give-aways on how the prportioning valve hangs on the inner fender apron. You can't really go by the bolt-on stuff.Erasing the holes for the quarter ornaments is another thing entirely. While you have to remove the inner trim panels to see them (and the usual glob of bondo filling them),you have to replace the quarter panels to eliminate them entirely.Same on the reinforcement plates inside the left rear frame rail.Veeeeery hard to duplicate and still look unmolested. That's why those are the sort of things that I look for on somebodies 'factory' GT.:)

Veronica, I have seen many A codes and a few K's that were not GT's with disc brakes, so the porportioning valve is not always accurate...

Hi again. This is true. The front discs were available as an option all by themselves.:) My 'K' code came with discs but is not a factory GT.All of the 'K' codes also came with dual exhaust, but the vast majority of them were not GTs.That would be yet another of so many reasons why it is very difficult to say with any degree of certainty that a car is a factory GT.There isn't really anything that a person could point out and say for sure "See?This is definitely a sho' nuff Factory GT"because anything can be duplicated by someone with sufficient knowledge, motivation and skill. There was a dealer here in town a while back that had an 'A' code fastback he was selling.Single exhaust,no stripes etc,etc..I think that this was probably the only non GT 'A' code fastback in Texas. :D

and we still can not trust the VIN, I have seen a 65 coupe with a 200 3 speed, all origional, including the 150,000 miles of grime. I was shocked to see the VIN, 5R07K.....

Do you have a photo of whre this extra bracket or hole would be on a non-factory GT??

The wiring harness for the GT fog lights is another place to look for authenticity especially where it goes thru the radiator support. You almost have to compare with a known GT, unless they really messed up the clone job.

I have reinforcements inside the rear frame rails for the exhaust brackets. I have located the threaded hole near the rear of both frame rails. Did they use these holes for shipping Factory GTs or did they secure them in anotherfashion. Does the 1966 GT have an extra bracket on the left side? Help Help
