Default Timing the crank to the cam?

LOL, no, I'm not so stupid as to not know that you use a timing set. My question is, how do I know where the cam and crank aligned correctly so I can then put the gears and chain on? I know that the dots are suppose to be opposite each other on the gears, but that doesn't help much if they're not on correctly on the respective shafts.

So, how do I know that the crank and cam are aligned correctly so I can bolt the gears on?

Acooljt,

The crank gear has a slot in it that will slide over the woodruff key that is in the snout of the crank. The cam gear has a dowel pin hole in it that will go on a dowel pin in the cam. They can only go on 1 way. slide on the crank gear over the key, and align the "dot" on the gear face to 12 O'clock. Then use the cam gear to rotate the cam so the "dot" is at 6 O'clock, the dots should now be lined up. then carefully pull the timing gear off, and put the timing chain over it. Let it hang down and install over the crank snout and onto the already installed crank gear. Then carefully (so you dont move the cam) slide the crank gear slightly back so the gears are aligned to on another, and start the cam gear onto the dowel pin in the cam. gently work both gears back into place until fully seated. check to make sure the "dots" are still in alignment. If so, install fuel pump eccentric, and cam gear retaining bolt, torque to specs. Clear as mud? Hope this helps. Your friend, BenC

Yeah, that helped and answered all my questions. That's what I thought and that's what the Haynes book says as well, but it seemed too simple to me to be that easy.

I wasn't so much worried about installing the timing set as I was that the crank and cam would not be aligned correctly.
