Default visual diff's in c4,6 fmx?

sorry i'm sure that someone has already explained what the visual differences between c4,6 and fmx but i can't find it. i have a 73? cleveland in my 68 and it came with a 289 so i was jsut wondering how i tell which trans is in it? i want to change the filter and fluid before i get it on the road. if i went with synthetic tranny fluid would it make that much of a difference since the convertor has traditional fluid in it? is it possible to change it all without pulling the trans and convertor out? hehe the guys on horsepower tv say that u get way better gas mileage with the synthetic. i'm sure if there were any tags on it the yahoo that had it before would have removed it since he did some very strange things to the car. thanks

a C4 and a C6 is aluminum, while an FMX is cast iron, so if a magnet sticks, it is an FMX. If it does not stick, a C4 has a bolt on bell housing, and the C6 is a cast on bell housing

You can also look at the tranny pan. A C4's transmission pan looks like this:

A C6's transmission pan looks like this:

A FMX's transmission pan looks like this:
