Default 69 coupe is it worth it?

Hey guys I'm a real noobie when it comes to stangs never mind older stangs. I currentyl drive a rx7 so even piston engine are kinda new to me lol. Either way i went to look at a 69 stang yesterday and want your opinion on if its worth it or not. Also there seems to be some chassis codes in the vin you talk about is that something i need to look into?

Here the details
1969 coupe straight six
good condition leather black interior (small crack on dash)
body is in pretty good shape just needs new set of front fenders and a couple spots need to be cleaned up then repaint the whole car (bondo on passenger side behind windows and rear driver side quater panel)
The scary part is the underbody. In the trunk if you reach to the drivers side were the trunk naturally dips down theres no bottom there, i can put my hand thorugh, and the other really bad spot is also on the drivers side aprox were the drivers feet are. Not a whole right though but it might as well be.
I saw the car late last night so need to go see it again, but those seemed to be the more problamatic places.
So how hard are those spots to fix? and is it worth it? I dont plan on restoring this car but do want to drive it daily.

other misc questions i have
how much does it normally cost to have all the exterior chrome polished or re chromed.
are there any other problamatic places i should look at?
sounds stupid but were does the frame usually rot?

i know its alot of questions, thanks guys

Default 69 Coupe

Not knowing where you live or where the ar has been sounds like some cancer/rust. Look underneath the car for Rust or undercoating going away. I had/have a 69 Coupe that has gone through many changes. From a 6cylinder 3 speed to a built 351W, built and kitted C4, 9 inch 3.70 Detroit locker rear end for short. The only think I haven't replaced is the front carpets with sound and heat proofing.

As a Six banger I put 200,000 miles on the car after I bought it from Coberly Ford in LA coming back from the war in 69. In 99 we started the rebuild. The 69 is a great car and fun to fix up. It is very unique. the only stock model with duel head lights and good muffler shop can weld in floor boards if they are rusted out. Check under the front passenger side carpet.

Check my gallery. It has been fun over the past 6 years. If the six hasn't been beat up to bad, with a good tune you can get 13-16 mpg around town and 20 on the road. As a GI I drove mine back and forth across the US many times. If you are looking for a hobby this is a great place to stick your money and have something that will turn heads. A clean Mustang will out shine a Chevy no matter what it has in it.

Hi, welcome to the forums!

Check your rear frame rails where the leaf springs are attached. This is usually a pretty bad area for rust. Also, the cowl, front frame, torque boxes, and under the battery are candidates for heavy rust.

It might cost a bit more but I would recommend getting a V8 car to start with. By the time you spend the money to repair the rust, bodywork, and paint, you will still have a 6cyl vehicle. Alot of people love 6's, but if you are planning on making it look nice and driving it (putting some money in it) you will justify your cash outlay better with a V8 car. And a V8 coupe will not be that hard to find. Just my .02 !

Good luck:thumbsup

You are right, it does cost to modify. From simple six to rocket V8 does cost. The warhorse transformation cost over the 6 years $25,000 and I still don't have it done but getting there. We all are a work in progress just ask our wives.

Heheh, Jess. Yeah, I'm still trying to justify the $13000+ I've put into my 68' Coupe and still have only managed to illegally drive it around my block!

I like that you have had your car for so long, since day1. Those kind of vehicles, not too many people have kept them for so long, which makes them really fun to drive and own! Take care of that Stang' !!

Well don't feel bad today including parts just laid out $700.00 for new leaf springs and Shelby traction masters/Bars. The price of speed and performance never ends.

Yeah, parts for these cars are really a lot less than most classic cars these days. I have spent around 3g to get me from a complete, but partly disassembled car with no brakes or interior to a car that I can drive on the weekends. I've rebuilt all the brakes (new lines/hoses, drums, cylinders, rotors, calipers, rebuilt master, and rebuild kits for drums), new power steering (minus the control valve), new Exhaust(long tube headers to tailpipe), New clutch linkage, Radiator hoses, and some other various things. I'm also redoing the wiring this weekend. For as many parts as I have purchased, I don't feel that I have spend too much on it at all. My car isn't even painted and it turns heads....I guess that could be because I live in Tennessee, and the previous owners sprayed "Roll Tide" on the side in darker primer.

I'll get a picture of mine when I go home tomorrow afternoon. I am still in the process of getting my 69 completely restored, but I just replaced the Ebrake lever. I believe there is a bracket down there that holds the spring back, and then I think it goes up through the floor panel and connects into the lever.
