I know on mine, it was a lot easier to replace it with the suspension under load, because that keeps the angle of the strut rod in a better position for you to get the socket on the bolt. When I jacked the car up and took the load off the suspension, that made the angle of the strut rod go up to the point I could not even get the socket on without stripping the edges of the nut.
