Default Junk yard big block.

I found a 68 Ranchero GT, rear smashed, but has a mostly intact engine. Carb and air cleaner are gone, but it's a 4bbl manifold, and it's a big block. Best part is it can be had for $145.
Trying to find out what engines came in this model, how to ID this one, and if it's worth my time to rebuild it try and fit it in a 67 coupe w/289.

Most common was the 390. Rarer was the 428 but possible. No gauarantees that the engine is even original after all this time. If it is a 390, I'd pass. If there's a very good chance it actually might be a 428 I'd have to jump on it. I'm not a big block guy but that'd be a heck of a deal.
Check with some "big block guys" to see if there's a good way to tell a 390 from 428 short of taking the engine apart.

The only 390 worth a damn had solid lifters and I doubt you'll find one in a Ranchero.
