What year mustang? is it.

If it is an FMX, I would guess that it is a 70 behind a 351C. Very Common.

If not, what is it?

What do you mean by better? A C6 is generally considered better and a small block version will fit behind the 351C.

The FMX is a really tough transmission but it is heavy due to the cast iron case. Unless I was looking to reduce drag time, I would leave it alone if it is working. If I had to change it out, C6 is best choice.

Why? FMX trannies are bullet-proof! You could replace it with a C6 or an AOD, if this is a 351C/SBF application.

FIRST CHECK THE VACCUUM MODULATOR! It'd be a shame if a $15 part led to a rebuild because you didn't check the simple stuff first.

An AOD would be a good choice if you want a 4spd auto, or a C4 3spd auto. The C4s are bulletproof, cheap and simple. The best shop in town wants ~$575 for a C4 rebuild, and I can pick up a C4 for less than $100 on a good day, I sold one for $125.

Cool

My 72 has an FMX also and it has the same problem. The transmission shop told me the same thing also. I found an 85 GT for parts so I'm going to put the AOD in it. The C6 is not a direct fit because the 71-73 'stangs didn't come with them so the trans mount doesn't line up. The C6 and the AOD share the same mount and mount location, so if you decide on either, be prepared to modify your X-member or buy a new one. CJ Pont Parts sells them for a little over a hundred bucks. If you're looking for cheap and easy, go with a C4; it shares the same mount as the FMX. The aftermarket has everything you can think of for the C4 and it will handle anything a 302 can dish out. It's also lighter than a C6 so it doesn't use as much horsepower. This equates to better fuel economy and more power to the pavement.
