Want to install a tach in a 67 Coupe. please help.
my 67 coupe doesnt have a factory tach, i want to add one, is the proper wiring in place for one from the factory? or do i have to install a secondary wiring harness. it seems to me that the tach would have to connect to the coil, or the distributer, correct? (i have aftermarket Mallory electronic ignition parts, unilite dist., pro-coil, etc)
i noticed some connectionts to the coil going through the firewall, i assume one of these controlls the ignition itself, like from the ignition key, but theres also another, might that be where the tach gets its data?
i am not really in the know, so any help from somone experienced in this sort of thing is greatly appreciated!
with your electronics, I would not use a factory tach, they do not tend to live long with a hot spark....also, the enire underhood and underdash wiring is different, it is not that easy of ajob splicing it in and the stock instrament cluster with a tach has gauges in different locations
i wasnt planning on using a factory tach, i was just sayin that my car didnt have a tach from the factory.. but, i under stand it will be a lil bit of work, and i would have to re-locate some of the factory gauges, thats not a problem (by relocate, i know i would have to buy some new ones, cuz the oil pressure and alternator gauges are in the right side pod. i would put the oil pressure in the center pod, and the alternator i might put under the dash, or not at all..)
anyways, a lil more detail would be appreciated...
on the 67 you cant just replace one of the gauges... well not with out alot of work... when you pull it apart you will know what i'm talking about... if you dont want to spend bigmoney just get a dashmount tach... but if you can spend like 500 then i would suggest getten autometer gauges, there are a few companies out there that take a stock bezel and mount these gauges in it.. looks awsome... dakota digital makes a digital dash for mustangs too..
I think... but i'm not posiitve here.. that i've seen these gauges for about $350, i will look when i get home if you want.. i have alot of mags that i flip thru, and i'm pretty sure i seen an ad for someplace selling these for 350.
what i did with my 67 setup, i took it all apart and removed all the gauges... and then i took the gauge clusterout of my 88 GT and carved it all apart with my dremel and i had to do some carving on the 67 guage back... then i had to wire up all the guages, cuz they had printed wires on the 88... and that looks pretty sweet.. but my 67 has the 88 wire harness and motor and trany so it would be more work for you to do.
Do any of you guys read "Mustang and Fords" magazine. In just about every issue JME Enterprises offers a new gauge cluster in black or engine turned and is reconfigured to easily accept the necessary gauges which it comes with. You get a 120MPH speedo, a Tach, Fuel level, Water temp and Oil Pressure. Best of all it looks as if it came from the Factory.
