Default Need some help guys on a 64 1/2

Howdy,
This is my first time posting on here, and I need to find out some info. My Stepfather owns a 1964 1/2 Mustang that he wants to sell. We are both Vette guys and aren't sure exactly how much to ask for this car. I will include all the information I have on the car below. I fanyone could give us a ballpark number we could ask for the car that would help out tremendously. The car does need a paintjob and headliner, but the guy who's looking at it is going to restore it fully anyway. I have included all of the logs kept on the car and the bio of owner history. Were not looking to gouge anyone on this deal but want to be fair. So if you can help great here goes:

Russ’ 1964 ½ Mustang

Dennis L. & Barbara J. Peterson originally purchased this Mustang from Lynn Kirby Ford, in Portland, Oregon, on June 8, 1964. The car’s window sticker price was $2,687.45, which included the options of 650X14 BSW Tires, AM Radio, 2 Speed Electric Windshield Wiper and Washer, and padded visors. The Petersons kept, what appears to be all the maintenance documents and seemed to have taken very good care of the car. Tracking the work done on the car was easy with all the receipts. Scheduled maintenance and oil changes were accomplished on time. In the twelve years, 4 months and 24 days, that the Petersons owned the vehicle, they spent a total of $1264.59 on recorded maintenance. This averaged out to be a modest $105.38 per year. The odometer rolled over 100,000 miles sometime between May 29, 1976 and June 4, 1977.

On may 5, 1977, William G. and Julianne Hance bought the car. The purchase price is unknown. It is unknown if the Hances kept up on regular maintenance. Receipts for the period they owned the vehicle are sparse. The only major repair documented was when the clutch was replaced in 1979. This was approximately three months before they sold the car. According to the receipts, the Hances spent a total documented amount of $406.58. This averages out to be $203.29 per year, which is approximately twice as much as the average of the Petersons.

On July 24, 1979, Vern and Eula Marriott bought the car. Purchase price is unknown. There are no maintenance documents for the period the Marriotts owned the vehicle. Details of how the car was found and purchased are unknown. The Marriotts are known to be collectors of classic autos, It is believed that the vehicle was bought for the wife, Eula, to drive on a regular basis.

On October 31, 1981, William B. Collins, my father purchased the Mustang for $2500.00. He was an excellent mechanic and completed the majority of the maintenance on the vehicle. He rebuilt the engine in January of 1989. Although there is not a receipt to verify it, the transmission was rebuilt in either 1995 or 1996. The last receipts he had for the vehicle was when he bought a new carburetor in November of 1996. This was 2 months before he found out he had cancer. He passed away in on April 27, 1997.

The car sat idle from the time he passed away until August of 1998 when I traveled to California to pick it up It was towed back to Bossier City on a U Haul dolly. The Mustang was in good shape and mechanically sound.

Documentation of the last 8 years to follow:

Depending on condition: Low retail $6000, Avg. retail $14,000, High retail $22,000.

Based on the photos I'd be asking high retail.

Hope that helps.

Hello.Welcome.I hate to have to say this, but that car won't bring 22K.It won't bring half of that.260 3-speed manual (kiss of death) no A/C, no nothing coupes, assuming that the floors are ok, with so-so paint and interior, and an engine bay in serious need of some detailing will be lucky to bring 8k.I wouldn't be able to get 22 for my 260 convertible and it's got a lot better initial eye appeal, automatic, a prettier color, etc...There's a 64 1/2 260 coupe for sale here in town for 15 that is an earlier car than yours,is red, automatic, A/C, nice paint and interior, beautiful engine bay,etc...And the guy that is selling it is a dealer in vintage mustangs and has been since before I was born.He knows exactly what he has and what it will bring. In fact, you can see the car at www.forristalls.com in the for sale section. You could also check ebay and see what similar cars are actually bringing.Hope that helps and again, welcome

I didn't say you would get 22 but I'd be asking that anyway. There are somethings that make this car worth just a bit more. Sure it is a plain white 260/3 speed, but it appears to be original, unmolested and looks to be pretty rust free, around here that's getting hard to come by. Also having the cars history at least in part is a good thing. Start high it will give you room to bargain with the buyer. Don't give the car away, I think you may get more for it that you may expect. You may not get 22 but I think you should be able to get more than 14 or 15 also-if the car is as rust free as it appears.

Sadly, unless in near mint very low mileage condition with most options, there is not a lot of collector interest in the early Mustangs. But having said that, the same could have been said in the past of quite a few cars that exploded in price in a very short period of time.

Park it for 10 years and you'll laugh at any stock portfolio.

I know that from experience, but I'm not laughing!

If you haven't priced 'stangs lately you're in for a shock! Fastbacks have gone through the roof and they have been dragging the price of coupes up with them. That coupe that may have been worth 8 to 10 G's a couple of years ago is worth a whole lot more than that today. I think a lot may depend on the area you're from too. When I lived up north in the Chicago area Mustangs didn't bring as much as Chevys did, It's been a long while since I've been up north but down here they are bringing a premium. Coupes are still affordable but you have to wonder for how long?

I think the problem is a bunch of guys my age that are trying to relive an adolesence that they never had. You see the same thing with bikes today. A bunch of older guys dressed in leather playing Billy Biker on the weekends. With bikes it doesn't matter for the most part the're buying new Harleys not old ones. With cars the're sucking up old cars left and right. In a few cases that might be a good thing but in most cases these folks arn't car people and never were and you have to wonder what is going to happen to these cars once the novelty wears off. Most don't have an appreciation for what they own and the cars will end up just another disposable toy when they are through. I hope I'm wrong but I'm probably not. A lot of younger car guys (and gals) are being priced out of ever owning a classic 'stang because some bozo saw Gone in 60 Seconds and wanted a car just like the movie. In my book that's a sad reason to go and buy a car. What's the answer? I wish I knew....

I'll get off my soapbox now......
