Need help with cowl, leaking like crazy

I just bought a 67 coupe. The cowl is leaking. No big suprise. I read on some sites that people was filling the cowl with spray foam to stop the water. And they welded a filler peice over the vents on the cowl cover. I know this is not the right fix but will this work. I really need helpwith this.

Won't work...not for long. A lot of the spray foam will break down from exposure, and even if it doesn't, it'll abosorb water like crazy...no good. Its something like 220 spotwelds to get the cowl cover off, if you get that far, WHY jerry rig it like that?
EDIT: Oops, misread :o You can't weld up the vents. Itll blow up the heater motor and the fresh air vent wont work.

Thanks. I read a how to on changing the vents its a pretty big job. Can they be eliminated for good? Or do they have to be there? As far as the fresh air vents, it doesn't matter if they are gone. I just want to stop the water. Thanks

I thought I saw in one of my Mustang Monthly’s a complete cowl top being reproduced for 67’s so you could cut the old cowl top off and repair properly. If your are going to spend the time to weld do it right. What I did on my son’s 67 coupe was cut off the cowl ends to expose the cowl vents right below the fender line and addressed the rust by cleaning and spraying Eastwoods coreless paint then seam sealing the holes, my son’s rust holes were small if they are big you must replace the vent dam piece. One leak stopped.

Default cowl repair

Mustang monthly has the complete repair on line if you want to go that route. It involves removing the fendres, the windshield and the welds that hole the cowl in place, replacing and patching the (top hats) and sealing. I bought a cowl cover to stop water and leaves from going in and just dont drive it in the rain.

If you go to the trouble of removing the complete cowl top for repairs make sure you prime and paint inside the cowl and the underside of the cowl top before reassembly. This will help eliminate the same problem happening again. Ford failed to do this originally and this is the main reason these cars are known for this. Also make sure the seam sealer isn't clogging and backing up the drains on the sides.

For those of you who live in the Northeast and use your Mustangs as daily drivers or store them outside buy one of those clear plastic cowl covers. Install it during the fall to keep leaves out and clogging the drains and trapping moisture in there.

Please check this first. I had a '65 Mustang that leaked like crazy. I was certain it was the cowl and yours may be. But what I did was stick a hose directly down the cowl with a gentle stream. No water on the floor. Hmmmm. So then I ran the hose up on the windshield and there was water everywhere. Turns out the windshield gasket was leaking like crazy around the top and letting water down on to the floor. A new gasket and the car was dry. Using the hose though, you should be able to tell where the water is coming from. I hope yours is just the windshield seal also.

I agree with Jay H 237 on the cowl cover. However, you wanna make sure you don't leave it on too long. Take it off and check the seal every now and then, and it might be a good idea to get a couple if your interested, because not all of them are the best designs so they dont last a really long time.
