Default Engine won't stay running !Help!

I have a 1966 coupe with a 200 motor. Recently, the engine will start up, but won't stay running or idle. The only time it will stay running is when we use the choke all the way, and it seems to run at a very high speed only, it won't idle down. We took the carb off and rebuilt it, but that didn't solve anything, and also hooked up a different choke. Any ideas? thanks, Garrett

Check the timing, fuel pressure, and look at the carb again. Actually, considering you just rebuilt the carb, I would look at it first. I would guess the float level might be wrong.

If this started before the carb rebuild then I would check the fuel pressure, and make sure the fuel filter is clean. check to make sure you know how many filters are on the car. You may have one just inside the carb, where the fuel line connects to it.

Question

Check the coil. My 6cyl acted the same way and the coil was shorting out internally. It only lasted 40 years before acting up.

Notwithstanding the fact that you've already rebuilt the carb, an engine that will only run with full choke has one of three problems: clogged carb, massive manifold vavuum leak somewhere, or bad fuel delivery! The reason is that using the choke increases venturi vacuum, sucking more gas into the intake. Check all your vacuum hoses at the carb + manifold, power brake booster (if equipped). If your carb rebuild was done properly and you don't have any vacuum leaks, I'd suspect your fuel pump/fuel filter/fuel line.

Default Fuel pickup

Hi,

I just remembered I had the same problem, it was the fuel pickup screen in the fuel tank. You can replace the pickup and that may fix it but I just disconnected the fuel line and hooked it up to my air compressor and blew it clear....I knew it was clogged by disconnecting the rubber fuel tube right at the fuel tank....the fuel just dribbled out or did not come out at all..

Good luck,
Dan

Default Engine won't stay running

I drained the gas tank, ( was recently filled up before i began working on the steering ), put new gas in it, and a new fuel filter and now it runs fine again. The gas didn't smell quite right when i drained it, possibly some bad gas from the local gas station.
