Default Is there a stroker kit for the 289 Block?

I can't seem to find a stroker kit designated for a 289 block. All of them seem to be for the later 302 or 5.0 blocks. I would like to rebuild my 289 motor with stock external appearance but run a 306 or 331 stroker stealthed inside.

Any links or info on how to stroke the 289 block would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Geo

Most 302 kits will work on a 289 block, just ask the vendor about your options, check Coast High Performance or DSS.

The reason why they never advertise the stroker kits as working for 289 engines is that the bore walls in the block do not extend as far down as they do in 302 engines. That basically increases the thrust wear on the piston and block. How much? I have no idea. I have even heard people argue against stroking a 289 to a 302 for this same reason, although I did not let this stop me!

I measured the bore walls when I had 302 & 289 apart at the same time and needed something more accurate than a ruler to tell if one was longer

Hi, dne' here. A man here in Houston built my 289. He would be able to help you~ he's very nice and builds motors in his garage. He's been building motors forever! I don't have his phone number handy, but email him with your question and he will give you an answer.
Tell him dne' told you to contact him. His name is Herb. His email address is HLGPER@comcast.net

early 302 blocks and 289 blocks are pretty much the same looking in the car. You can run most of the smaller stroker kits in the 289 they just don't advertise the application as being for a 289 because the longevity isn't there. If you want to run the stroker just get a 302 block to use to be safe so you don't have to worry about there being too much stress on the bore walls.

You can stroke the 289, you may have to call the supplier as they don't always show all applications. I had a local reputable shop do mine, the block was already bored to .030 and to clean it up we had to go .040" so i now have a 333 c.i. I used KB pistons and Scat cast crank/3.25" rods with AFR 165 58cc heads. I haven't installed it yet but I expect it to run like a raped ape compared to the 200HP stock I had.

The shop barely had to notch the bottom of the cylindersleeves to clear the rod caps, I also added an FMS windage tray, just needed a dent to clear one rod cap. I didn't want to push the motor closer to the edge by going 347 as the rod angle gets more excessive and I want this motor to be daily driveable and last 100K+ but be capable of some 1/4mi. and road course fun.

If you're building it yourself do a lot of research, figure out what cc the heads are you'll be using so you can match your pistons up for whatever compression ratio you're shooting for. I ended up with 9.6:1 as I wanted to be between 9.5 and 10 so I could advance my dist. for racing and retard it to use 87/89 for highway driving. If you're going to let a shop build the shortblock at least, I'd sit down with the builder and discuss what you're going to use the car for and they'll help you narrow down the cam and comp. ratio you should use with all your factors (trans., rear diff. ratio, etc.). I first used CompCams free camquest program to narrow down which cams I was interested in, settled on the XE262 since I'll be using PB and A/C, I listened to a friends 268 and it was too lopey for me, he also lost vac. at that grind. The Camquest is a neat program as you can change variables (diff. ratio, etc.) and rerun it to see what effect it has on the overall.

The 289 is perfectly useable in my book and I really prefer using my original block as most of the cars around me all have the later model 302, I like being different and squeezing potential out a 'little 289'. My block, heads, intake will all be painted stock ford blue for a little sleeper edge.
If you have any questions on my build drop me a PM.
Jon
EDIT: Oh man I just noticed, Chris; did you drag this up from 2006?

The early 289 and 302 blocks had the same bore so the kits will work but like mostly everyone else said you may run into issues else where.
