Default need 289 motor build up

Hi guys what would you recommend for a 289 build up in my 65 Mustang, looking for a nice hp and torque gain and also have a cam with a nice chop to it .Looking at getting a hydraulic cam, intake, carb, heads , headers , rockers. The only thing I have in mind so far is a set of AFR heads(just don't know which ones) all the rest in up in air. What stall for the auto tranny and maybe shift kit, what rear gears should I run, this car will only see weekend cruises and car shows , be streetable and run pump gas 93 octane, not tach up so high on highway also, want a cam that won't effect my power items in car ,power brakes , power steering , a/c

Soooo...lets see...that would mean that you just about want it all-the perfect 'stang

The best advice I can give would be to stay conservative. Don't over build. You should be able to get her up to around 300HP without to much trouble. That may not sound like much but is really pretty respectable for a 289.

So here's the recomendations, we'll all have different opinions, so take this for what it's worth...

I'm assuming this is a fresh short block if not then the first step is to rebuild the bottom end with QUALITY parts...

Dual plane hi rise, Weiand Stealth or Edelbrock Performer RPM
Autolite 4100 four barrel
Ignition upgrade
Tri-y headers
You already have heads picked out-I'd suggest you stay with 1.94 valves rather than 2.02's
Keep the cam at around 220 duration and .470 lift (at .050 lift)
No more than a 2400 rpm stall converter
street/strip shift kit
3.50 gear (no more than 3.70 unless you add an AOD)

export brace
monte carlo bar
subframe connectors
traction bars
front disc brake upgrade
good quality shocks
and be sure the car is structually sound...solid frame rails, torque boxes and floor pans

Good Luck...
Mike

PerfomerRPM, 4100 carb or any 600cfm aftermarket unit, headers (Ceramic heddmans?) Lunati 61002 cam, Ford DurasparkII igniton, AFR165s 58cc non-emission, 10.5:1 compression.

I agree with the above poster and im too lazy to type all that!

I second all of the above also, my personal combo is the following:

Weiand Stealth (mild porting)
Ported 289 heads with 1.94 and 1.6 valves
Comp Camps stamped steel roller rockers
Holley 4 bbl. 600 cfm vacum sec. carb
Pertronix Conversion, MSD blaster 2 coil
Summit long tube headers, flowmaster 3 chambers, and 2 1/2" full exhaust thru the rear valance
.040 overbore with forged pistons
Very mild hyd. cam

Im very pleased with it, its very nice and torkey, and very reliable, dont have any dyno numbers, but again, its nice, fun and very reliable for me.
