Default solid state instrument voltage regulator

anyone ever replace their instrument cluster 5V voltage regulator with a solid state one? it's much cheaper and should last much longer.

the only reason i can think of for the original mechanical style is large current requirements: is a 1 amp regulator enough? anyone know how much current runs through the guages?
