Cool Added power steering to a 68, turns left all by itself?

Hi,

I am performing a major conversion to a 68 coupe. The old "T" code has a rear end out of a 67 cougar, front disc out of a 78 Granada, power steering out of a 70 cougar and a 5.0/AOD out of a 89 LX. I am still in the integration phase since I have rebuilt most of these items.

The steering: I put a rebuild kit into the valve body and purchased a new power piston (the shock absorber looking part??). The power steering pump is the one from the 89LX. When I start the engine and then touch the steering wheel the steering begins to turn left automatically. I have adjusted the one nut to the specified torque rate as to not sheer the retainer pin within the valve body. Can anyone help me understand what I may have done incorrectly?

Thanks,

You could have the pressure and return hoses switched?

Another common mistake is the adjust the nut at the end of the control valve (under the cap) using foot/pounds of torque instead of inch/pounds. Huge difference. Usually, if you have the hoses reversed, when you start the car, it will violently jerk the steering wheel out of your hand. It sounds like yours is a more moderate steer and I would play with the adjustment nut on a trial and error basis until it centers properly. BTW, if I remember correctly, you torque the nut to 100 inch/pounds which is equal to 10 foot/foot pounds. Very lightly.
