Cool To NOS or not to.....

O.K. fellas I have ran into a dilemma. I am having a thought about putting nitrous on my mustang. I know it will never be a "back to numbers" car and would like to find a cheap, safe, and easy way to add a little extra giddy-up to my pony. Have any of you done this or what do you think?

Almost a Shakespeare moment there

To NOS or not to NOS
That is the question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind
to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous Mustangs
Or to take wrenches to a sea of gaskets
and by tightening in opposing order,
torque them?

Ah, who understands British iambic pentameter anyway?

Nitrous will certainly wake up your car but if your avatar is a pic of your car, be careful to get someone who knows carbeuretted engines to help you set the timing. You may also want to swap out your cam and re-jet your carb to keep your pistons from cooking and melting into a puddle of really unattractive slag. You'll be putting a lot of extra O2 into your engine so you will want to be able to give it plenty of extra fuel to burn. More fuel+more oxygen=big, fast boom, in your cylinders. You can run lean and detonate (pre-ignition or "ping") badly.

You can melt a piston between your house and the end of the block.

It can totally be done safely, just get some help, in person, to show you how. Start with a small shot, like 50-75hp and then check your plugs to look for overheating/burning. Remember no one ever was sorry they ran a little rich. Woooo, you have to clean your sparkplugs occasionally. I know I can live with that.

Good luck. If you don't know anyone who can help, check the car shows and hang out at the drag track. Pay the extra $2 to hang out in the pits and strike up a conversation with someone with a car like yours. Or a car with an engine like yours.

Never hit the nitrous before 2,500RPM or close to redline or it'll be raining engine parts. Your engine parts.

There is a CarTech book available for your local bookstore, like Hastings or Barnes&Noble called "How to Install and Use Nitrous Oxide"

Huh, can't find that at Amazon but there's:
http://www.amazon.com/Nitrous-Oxide-...e=UTF8&s=books

and oh, never mind... found it:

Yeah, the Shakespear theme was the idea. lol. Thank you soooo much for the info. Should I go ahead and get a better fuel pump? I think the kit I was looking at has 50 hpr jets. I really don't know anything about nitrous so all the advise is great. Oh yeah, I just uploaded some more pics of my car, including the engine, so take a look.
