Unhappy Verification of engine against chassis?

Hi All,

I would like to know where to find an engine number on a 289 Windsor and if it matches say the VIN in any way? My car is a supposed to be a GT factory therefore should have the A code engine as per the VIN, but with some panel work up front and the possibility that the engine mounts have been modified, I am horribly under the impression that a six may have resided there once and that someone has added all the GT bits such as dash etc. Hopefully someone can tell me where the engine number is so as I know if the engine is original and an A code.

Cheers

Since I posted this thread, I have since found out that in the states, numbers are not stamped on the engines. In my opinion rebirthing would be very easy over there!!

Can someone tell me what to look for to distinguish between a C code and an A code engine without using a VIN stamped on the top fender as this could have even been cut and shut!!

They/we started stamping C.U.N.s on engines in maybe 1968, or sometime thereafter.

Hello. There is no difference between a 'C' code and an 'A' code block, heads and spinning assembly. The only difference between the two motors is the intake and the carb.If the date codes on the block and heads are consistant with the production date of the car, there is no way to say that they are not original. The engine tag, if still present, will have a different code on it for 'A' codes than for 'C' codes. The only 289s with neads and block that were different were the 'K' codes and the original motors for those had the vin stamped on the passenger side of the block towards the front, right above the oil pan, about two thirds of the way back to the motor mount from the timing chain cover.Hope that helps.
