Question 289 oil pan installation

Hi, I am new going to replace the oil pan, on my stock 66, with a 289. I have everything removed, starter, steering, cross member. My question is I test fit the pan, with the U gaskets in place, but it did not seem to fit when I held it up to rear of the engine. When I removed the orginal pan it did not have ay kind of seal in the rear, but there was one in the front. I checked and it is the right pan and gasket kit. Do I just use gasket sealer in the rear? any advice would be a great help. I am new at restoration but I am really having fun. Thank You Donny.

Donny, going from memory here, the back of your oil pan should have a big "U" shape. There should be a six inch or so rubber strip that fits into the groove of the engine where this "U" mates up. The long cork gaskets that run along each side have a tab at the end. Those tabs should slide under the tabs on each end of the rubber strip for a tight seal. This is how you seal up the rear of the pan. If your gasket kit does not have the rubber strip, I believe you need to go back to the store. You may see the old black rubber strip still seated in the groove and that may be why you didn't see any rear gasket when you pulled it apart. I hope this helps.
