Hey all, maybe you can help me out with some easy advice. So heres the deal. I'm building a 65 coupe for street/strip. Mostly street though. I am putting in a 500 hp 351W that will be delivered to me in 2 weeks. This car is origionally auto c-4 with a 200ci 6-cyl. I was origionally going to go with a tremec TKO 600 w/ complete hyd. clutch conversion. I am now reconsidering my options, just to see both sides of the transmission story. I am considering using an auto
tranny, because of the complexity in doing the auto->manual swap. Im not exactly looking forward to chopping up the center console to fit the taller tko 600. I figure the car came with a c-4... a 351 and built c-4 should just drop right in with minimal hassle. The reason I was always against autos is because the only ones I ever drove or rode in were stock, slow shifting dogs. But I know I can get a built
tranny that will slam into each gear. So that problem is solved. The other thing I like on a manual is engine braking upon deceleration. Normal autos I drove freewheeled. Would a built auto do engine braking? How does that tie in with the converter stall speed? Once I get back below the stall speed, will the car freewheel? I have some questions about the valve body as well. I understand that if I am using a full manual valve body, it will stay in the gear selected and will not downshift if you start out at a light in say 3rd gear. So I would always have to remember to go back to first at a light, like on a manual
tranny. Is this correct? What about if I run an auto/manual valve body? On a c-4, would it be like P-R-N-D-3-2-1 or P-R-N-D-2-1? And why would I want a reverse pattern valve body? To push or pull shifting? Or because of having 1st by neutral? On a built auto, are neutral drops bad? Also, I don't know how much I'd like having only 3 gears. What about using a built AOD? What would you guys reccommend in the case of my auto or manual woes?
