Default best place to hook up 12 volt positive for volt meter

I have a aftermarket Auto Meter Volt gauge, where would the best place be to pick up a good 12 volt positive source on my 65 Mustang be, would the starter relay be a good spot, if so where on the starter relay, I had it hooked up to my 12 volt wire that feeds the heater switch, but whenI put turn signals on,the gauge needle jumps around

I'd say the solenoid, on the post where the positive battery cable goes.

Hmmmm! I wonder---if you hook the voltmeter up to the solenoid (battery cable post) the meter will be measuring the battery output. It will remain "on" until the battery wears down. It won't matter whether the key is on or off, it'll stay on 24/7..You have to use a SWITCHED 12 volt source, so when you turn off the key the voltmeter is also off.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I certainly could be, since I'm FAR from an electrical guru.

Yeah, you're right. You could use a relay on the ground circuit, or connect the positive side of the gauge to the switched side of the ignition switch - as close as possible to the switch.
Then again, maybe the gauge doesn't draw enough current to drain the battery in a short amount of time.

Meangreen92,
You're right---you have to hook it up to the switched side of the ignition switch, as close to the switch as possible. You're also right when you say the gauge doesn't draw enough power to drain the battery in a short amount of time, but don't forget, the gauge will always remain "on". I wouldn't want the gauge remaining on all the time, I'd want it to operate only when the ignition is "on".
