Default Transmission won't shift to 2nd gear

I recently replaced my clutch and during the disassembly process I had to disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission shifter. After reassembling everything, the transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd (It does shift to reverse). The car (a 65 with a 289 4V) has a 3spd transmission. Is there a special process for reconnecting the shift lever to the linkage? Does the shift linkage need to be in neutral? Is there an alignment pin to help line things up? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello.1st and reverse are same rod. That's why you can go back and forth between those two.Your shifter isn't crossing over to the 2nd/3rd shift rod.Disconnect the two rods from the shifter, put both shift levers on the tranny in neutral position, stick a 1/4 inch pin through the allignment hole in the side of the shifter and make sure that it is going through both shifter arms and that the shifter handle inside the car is in the middle position, then re-attach the shifter rods to the shifter and that should get you back up and running.Hope that helps.
