Question Fuel Gauge problem

Ok, here is the problem, My fuel gauge dosent work, I grounded it out and it read full, so I replaced the sender and low and behold it still dosent work still shows around 1/4, so I thought CVR, but all the other gauges work, so I feel that is not the problem....Help 1965 Convertible 289 fully restored.....

Just for gits and shiggles, change out the insturment cluster VR. If it still doesn't work, then it's in the wiring, considering everything else is good. I've heard of bad parts out of the box, but it sounds like the guage is good. Hope this helps. Just another thought, you sure the float is not sticking???

Default CVR should be good

I am assuming the CVR is good since the temp gauge is working, as it supplies power to both the temp and fuel gauge, also when I ground out the sender wire the gauge pegs full, so the CVR should be good......I am stumped..

I have the same problem. I changed out the CVR, fuel gauge, and fuel sender. The new parts didn't help. I'm also stumped. It was working fine when I first bought the car. It crapped out after 2 months of driving it. Let me know if you find a fix.

Hello. If only one gauge is acting funny then it isn't the instrument cluster voltage regulator.Since the gauge pegged when you grounded it out, it isn't the gauge. That leaves the sending unit or the wire going to it.It is actually quite common for the repop sending units to be defective. If you go ahead and get a Ford sending unit I suspect that your problem will clear right up.

On classic Mustangs the sending unit is nothing more than a veriable resistor. 73 ohms empty and 12 ohms full after 1989 Ford went to 16 ohms empty 158 ohms full. Disconnect your sending unit wire at both ends and check it with an ohm meter(digital meter easiest to read). You should have about an ohm or so of resistance,if you have no resistance at all you have a broken sender wire. I don't know where you grounded your gauge at that's why I mentioned this. Make sure that your fuel tank is properly grounded ,a faulty ground will give you erroneous fuel gauge readings since the fuel sender depends on a good fuel tank ground to the chassis. On the fuel gauge end you should have the one wire to the sender, a pulsing 5 volts from the gauge voltage regulator and a GOOD ground. If the sender reads anything out side of the 73-12 ohm range it's a bad sender or the wrong one. If it's a couple of ohms outside this range that's not a problem. A lot of grief can be caused by faulty grounds. Luck to ya.========== Chuck

Hello. If you live in Sugarland, you can just take the car to K&R Mustangs and that guy can tell you anything that you want to know about your car. I'm not sure of the name of the street he's on, but if you're coming south on Eldridge from Houston, you go to where Eldridge t-bones into that other street and appears to end, turn left and go to the next light, where Eldridge picks up again, turn right and go to the next light, turn right and go down about a quarter of a mile and you will see an old pos dark green Corvair on the right, turn right and K&R is a little ways down on the right. I guess that old Corvair is still there. I haven't been down that way in quite a while, but I know it sat there for at least 10 years and I can't imagine that the owner was able to convince anyone to haul it off for him. The guy down there knows what he's doing, though. He could check it out for you. Of course, that is a place of business. He doesn't just do that for a hobby.
