Hello. It would help a bunch to know what year model car we're talking about. If the car has an automatic transmission, try putting it in neutral and starting it.If that works then you have a bad neutral safety switch.Hope that helps.

Question

sorry the car is a 66 and it has a automatic tranny. i had another question is it normal for the alternator to arc a little when i connect the battery, i had a short in a gauge so i started following the wires and found the short but then found that everytime i connected the wires to the alternator the battery would arc. i havent tryed to check if the alternator regulator is drawing the current yet but once i disconnect the wire at the alternator it does not arc.

Hi again.Your alternator should have three wires hooked to the back of it on the posts marked 'Bat' , 'Fld' and Grd'.If you re-attach the big wire to the post marked 'Bat' while the battery cables are connected, then that one probably would spark some. You should always disconnect the battery before you start messing around with the alternator wiring. However, the alternator wiring is not what's preventing your car from starting. It sounds like your alternator wiring might be what will set your car on fire, but it won't prevent the car from starting. If you can put the key in the 'on' position and everything seems to be working, like the gauges, turn signals, etc... and then when you turn the key to the 'start' position you get nothing, not click, a groan, nothing, then your problem is going to be either the neutral safety switch, the ignition switch, the wiring running between the starter solenoid and the ignition switch, or from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch more than likely. If it was me with a car doing what you describe I would replace all of the wiring under the hood, just because, even if it isn't giving me trouble right now, it surely will in the very near future. There are only four harness assemblies under the hood of your car, the engine gauge feed, the headlight feed, the alternator harness and the neutral safety switch assembly, all of which will cost you a grand total of like 180 bucks and can be replaced in an afternoon by somebody with only the most basic mechanical skills. If you do that the starting problem might go away all by itself just because the car appreciates a little attention.Hope that helps.

the alternator arcs from the fld post i didnt try to hook up the alternator with the battery connected i was trying to find a short and thats the wire i traced down then i just touched teh flood wire to the post and it arced a little. i also got advice from a friend saying that the cabel goign from the selinoid to the starter might be corroded inside. and also could the ground goign from the engin to the chassie cause any of these problems. im gogin to go try the netural start thign today and ill let u know how that goes.

well i htink i might have found the problem as soon as i disconnected the alternator regulator the car started right up i think the regulator was grounding out all the power to the chassie and the netural starting thing didnt do anything diffrent im going to change the regulator hopefully that solves the problem

Sounds like the alt was wired wrong. It can be confusing as one of the posts on the back has a brown insulator but it not used.. the ground goes on a post that does not have an insulator. the other two should be part of a plug that will only fit on the two posts, one way.
