Hi again.

Your alternator should have three wires hooked to the back of it on the posts marked 'Bat' , 'Fld' and Grd'.If you re-attach the big wire to the post marked 'Bat' while the battery cables are connected, then that one probably would spark some. You should always disconnect the battery before you start messing around with the alternator wiring. However, the alternator wiring is not what's preventing your car from starting. It sounds like your alternator wiring might be what will set your car on fire, but it won't prevent the car from starting.

If you can put the key in the 'on' position and everything seems to be working, like the gauges, turn signals, etc... and then when you turn the key to the 'start' position you get nothing, not click, a groan, nothing, then your problem is going to be either the neutral safety switch, the ignition switch, the wiring running between the starter solenoid and the ignition switch, or from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch more than likely. If it was me with a car doing what you describe I would replace all of the wiring under the hood, just because, even if it isn't giving me trouble right now, it surely will in the very near future. There are only four harness assemblies under the hood of your car, the engine gauge feed, the headlight feed, the alternator harness and the neutral safety switch assembly, all of which will cost you a grand total of like 180 bucks and can be replaced in an afternoon by somebody with only the most basic mechanical skills. If you do that the starting problem might go away all by itself just because the car appreciates a little attention.Hope that helps.
