Default Heater box assembly... help

I recently bought a 66 coupe. Problem is it didn't come with a heater box assembly. Nothing but a couple holes leading into the firewall and the cowl. I picked up a used heater box off of ebay, but the thing came in pieces. I think I figured out how the majority of it goes together. I've identified the heater box door, the v-shaped trap door thingy that rotates inside the box, the metal cover that frames the heater core (although I have no idea how it is orientated in the assembly), and of course the two halves of the assembly itself. There is a flat square piece of metal that I'm not sure what to do with. I know I'm missing the plenum and hoses, some screws, and I heard some foam belongs in there somewhere as well, but I have no idea exactly what else I'm missing, or how it all goes together for sure. Does anyone have any diagrams or links to diagrams that show a complete heater assembly for a 66 coupe? Maybe any tips on restoring the heat? I did a search and found a couple good links, but nothing that goes into the kind of detail I'm looking for. Thanks for any help you guys can give me. I'll include pics of my progress as I restore the assembly.

I have a few photos of the one in my '68 that I redid on my website, heater_core_replacement that may help you some. The first photo will show you how that 'V shaped trap door thing' resides in the box.

The replacement foam was thick in areas and the two halves wouldn't go together easily so it had to be shaved down some.

Default heater box assembly

To the guy with the 66 mustang,
If you are looking for diagram assembly to your
heater box the best place to go is your local
library thats where i went for mine. Tip just make
sure your vent doors open and close correctly
before you hook your cables back up.

If you buy the repro gasket set for the heater box, the instructions have the illustrations.

Hi Smitty!

I just completed a restoration on my Mustang's Heater Box and can give you some tips,k with pictures.

I know you bought a used item off of EBAY. In case your old one is not out of the car- might be able to use these pics for some reference.

First the pics:

The circled item is the heater 'relay'. The EBAY box you bought may not have one (if a heater-delete car- rare but I have seen it) or its broken. There are about 20.00 so handle with care. Do not try the motor without it or you will burn out your motor quickly.

Suggestions:

* Test the new core before using it (if you are installing a new one or know your existing one is fine). I hooked up a garden hose to the top half and corked the bottom and let sit in the sub on my driveway. THey rarely leak when new but believe it or not, the first one I bought leaked..

* Use a good quality clamp (you will need two)- Best you can find. Claimp them with a small wrench- not a screw driver. Don't strip them out. Be gentle. They like to leak here.

* Install the hoses before the assembly is in the car- feed them through the two holes- have a helper carefully pull them thorugh- then push through the firewall.

I used the above referenced site mentioned earlier- and loved it. I had pictures of his site (as well as those on Mustang Monthly's site) printed out.

How is the cowl? Might be a good time to blow out the cowl- chances are there are at least a lb. of oine needs up there. clean and paint- I POR's mine. Re-caulk the seams. Here is the cowl hole above my heater box- here is what I mean by clean and paint:
