Exclamation Help! Problem with 1966 Mustang fuel tank sending unit removal?

I am in the process of putting a new fuel tank sending unit into my 66 coupe. How do you remove the old one. I disconnected the hoses but don’t know what to do next. There isn’t any bolts or anything that seem to be holding it in. Do I have to pry it off or something? Thanks, Garrett

there is a metal lock ring holding it in, take a chissel and a hammer, put it against one of the three tabs sticking out and hit it loose. A small turn will knock it off

Do I have to have the gas tank out to do it? I remember hearing somewhere that you have to take it out. It would be great if i could remove the fuel tank sending unit withhout having to take the gas tank out. Thanks, Garrett

Tank removal is not required! Just jack the car up and support it!!! Take car when you remove the old one and especially when you install the new one.

Pay close attention to where and how the float is when you take the old one out!

One thing to be careful of. Use a non-sparking material such as a piece of brass rod or aluminum rod in stead of a steel chisel when removing and installing the locking ring. I know just about everyone has used a steel tool for removing the ring, but a spark being produced in this area could lead to a disaster. Just adding some food for thought. All the best,--- Chuck
