Exclamation 1966 Mustang Data Plate Info. Need Help!

I have a 66 A code coupe that has a driver door from a different car and I am trying to find out if there is any way to find out the data plate info. I know the VIN is in a couple for places but did not know if the data info is somewhere. It was made in San Jose. Thanks for any help you can give.

I got the same problem with my car, but I got the VIN off the fender lip, so I got that, and I figured for the rest of the data plate I would just make up what sounded good, since it's not going to be anything close to original.

Unless you know the history of the car going back to the original owner there's no real way of finding out all the info as you can with 67 and later vehicles.

The DSO is the one you'll never know.

The date you may be able to come up with one within a few days if you find one with a VIN number close to yours with an intact data plate. Look at 1966 Mustangs for sale on eBay and a lot of times they show pics of the data plates. You might get lucky and find one just a few digits away from yours and be able to narrow it down to the same day or so.

By inspecting the car closely you may be able to take educated guesses on the others. Look up into the fender recesses in the trunk and peel the rug back in spots. If the car is green right now and you find white paint back in the recesses or under the rug then you could guess the car was originally Wimbledon White, unless it was a one off special color close to Wimbledon. If the interior appears to be original then you may take a guess on the too but it is possible that at some point it could have been changed completely from another car. The same goes for the transmission and rear end.

Unfortunately the Ford Motor Co. in their infinate wisdom destroyed all of the records for vehicles they built from 1966 and earlier. The records from 1967 forward were rescued fortunately and are available.---Chuck

From a little digging I somewhat figured out that it was black luxury interior, Color was sauterne?(sp) Gold metallic (Special order)and a C-4 Automatic but not sure about the rest. Any ideas based on A code 289 what the axle ratio might be? Car spent its whole life in Cal. so its DSO has to be either LA or San Jose. Thanks for your repsonses!

Did some digging also and came up with two choices. 2.79:1 and 3.00:1. With your engine being an A code I would lean toward the 3.00:1 ratio. These ratios are what I found listed for the C4 transmission.-Chuck

To know what the car has he could jack up the rear and spin the tires by hand and count the revolutions of the driveshaft. With a 3.00:1 ratio if you spin the tire 1 complete revolution the driveshaft should turn 3 revolutions. Of course if the rear end or gears have been changed sometime in the past this won't give an answer as to what it had originally.
