Hi again. While it is true that there are many similarities between the Falcons and the Mustangs, there are surprisingly few parts that are actually interchangeable. They call the 65 Mustang instrument cluster bezel the 'Falcon style', but, you can't use it on a Falcon, nor could you use a Falcon bezel on a Mustang. Same with the glove box. No body panel is interchangeable, none of the interior components, etc... The only things from a Falcon that you could actually use on a Mustang would be drive-line components and some of the front suspension components. The Mustang was built on the Falcon platform, but that does not mean that you could bolt all of the mustang body panels to a Falcon. It started out as a Falcon on paper, and was redesigned to accomodate the longer hood, shorter deck and far less spacious back seat area. If someone took a person blindfolded underneath a Falcon that's on a lift, it would be instantly recognizable as a Falcon, because the floors and basic structure of the cars are completely different.
11 hours before the Mustang was introduced to the public it was going to be called the "FORD COUGAR" and the "MERCURY MUSTANG"..
The 64 1/2 was basically the prototype for the 65 model.
Passenger seat didn't move,2 speed blower switch, door handles clipped on, hood mating serface on the grill insert beveled down..etc... on the 64 1/2
Interesting I did not know that. In other words, i would be driving a 68 Mercury Mustang.....sounds better don't you think.

Comments welcome ---is this a car anybody has been looking for?
Hello, just jumping in on this thread. I also have a 64.5 conv with the Vin # 5F08D110621 76A 42 09D 24 1 5 sold to Lynch Davidson Motors, Jacksonville Fl.
Almost complete with upgrading things like the suspension, wiring, and hope to be on the road this spring here in MN.
The car was made April 9, 1964 the week before official introduction. Now the bad news, NOTHING is standard and after market parts don't fit. It looks like Ford had these early production cars hand made before the templates and jigs were finalized. The wiring is something to be desired. Holes with nothing there and no holes where they should be, etc...
And you're correct, Falcon parts galore, even the primer behind the interior panels, trunk area, firewall,.. all painted the famous Falcon light blue sky. Anyway, it's a fun car to drive and we enjoy it a lot (before I put it on stands 4 years ago). I attached a copy of the sticker window outlining the extras on this car.

Hi again. That's kind of what this thread is all about. Even though your vin says it's a 65, what you have is a 64 model car. There is not one part anywhere on the car that is both original to the car and has a part number that starts with C5. My car is the same way. Different headlight switch, brake light switch, horn button assembly, etc.. Different from a 65 Mustang, that is. Standard stuff for a 64 model Ford. All of the electrical stuff was designed for a generator type charging system, which Ford dropped at the end of the 64 model year.
I'm new to this forum, and have learned so much reading through everything. I had a 66 mustang about 11 years ago and sold it due to needing something to haul my kids in. I was pregnant at the time. I've kicked myself for the past 11 years. So tomorrow, I get to go pick up my next 66 mustang. I'm excited and anxious all at the same time. I get to restore it with my son, the one that i sold my first one for. I can't want to sit and go through all the codes to see what was original on the car. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me know. (I think i'm going all orginal except for maybe the color, but that depends on the orginal color.) I also know of a salvage yard that has many sitting around if anyone needs orginal parts.

I know the feeling, my very first car was aslo a 66 mustang, it had the inline 6 with a 3 speed manual transmission, it was a fun car to drive and I spent hours upon hours fixing it up, I ended up selling it because I wanted a V-8. It wasent until 3 years ago where I found the ford I now drive, glad to say its a daily driver. Is there any way of finding out the history of my
car? heres my vin 5RO7C182144
Hello. If, by history, you mean where the car has been for the last 40+ years, sadly, there is not.If the car has been registered continuosly in the state that you bought the car, you can try a title search with the dmv. The door tag on your car will tell you what the car came with as far as interior, transmission and rear axle gear ratio. Assuming that it's an original door tag. Would you mind telling me the scheduled production date on the door tag of your car? I have the data on some cars near yours, and it would really help me dial it in a little bit closer. I'm thinking that yours should be 03B, but, if you could help me out on this, I would appreciate it.

thank you for the welcome, a title search you say? im sure its been in this state becasue my car has the original black plates, ill call dmv to see if they can send me that title search your talking about.
The door tag reads O4B, I remember someone asking me if the engine in my car was original and I had no clue, this lead me to dig around looking for a vin, after looking I could not find one!
I did find lots and lots of parts numbers around the block like on the intake, alternator, and so on but no vin # any where!! I read on a site where it said you gotta take out the starter and underneath you should see a tag with a stamp, sure enough I found it but I forgot the numbers they read like 4NB I think, so from this I know the block was built back in 64 so It might be the original.
