Hey Veronica,

You'll like this. I went down to the DMV to get the title corrected and they told me they couldnt change it. It looks like I'm stuck with a 1964 mustang LOL

This is agreat thread with lots of right-on stuff.

Something I didn't see mentioned above was that the 64 1/2 models had a hydraulic brake light switch on the master cylinder and not the mechanical switch on the brake pedal.

Mine gave me so much trouble that I decided to convert it. When I did, I learned that I had to replace the master cylinder push rod with one that had the flat on the end that somehow actuates the switch. Another thing that was a complete surprise was that I couldn't get the pin back in the stud on the post of the brake pedal becausee the stud was too short to accept the newer brake light switch. So... I had to round up a 65 type brake pedal.

There are so many little things that are different about these cars, but I would never have guessed that the brake pedal would even be different!

The 64 1/2 had big metal horns behind the radiator and a horn relay and the 65 models used the newer, smaller horns in front of the radiator and didn't need the relay. I guess the current draw was less, so they didn't need it...

Default 64 1/2 engine compartment decals

Can someone describe to me (pics. would also be great) the correct decals and placement on a 64 1/2 D Code 289 4-V air cleaner. I read that the D Code was the only 289 that used a black, white & red sticker but I have only found blk, white & orange.

Also, I'm looking for gold valve covers and a console (auto/AC), preferably NOS or used if anyone has any ideas where to search.

thanks, Joe

Great info... The 64 1/2 I'm restoring currently was a one owner and had a mix of the true 64 parts and some 65 parts. It's build was June 30th 1964 with sheetmetal stamps of June 18, 19 etc... It has front seatbelts only, the beveled hood and headlight buckets, no-external resistor on the heater box, etc. But the passenger seat IS moveable, didn't come with color keyed door lock knobs, and some other odds/ends. I was told that some of these true 64 oddities were phased out as supplies ran low?? Any comments? The owner told me that a dump truck had backed into him in the early 70's so the Radiator support had been replaced, hood , headlight buckets, even the fan and water pump were damaged. The one question is that since this car is close to the mix and match 64-65 parts as seen on the July-August cars, I'm not sure if it had the cast pulleys on it? It currently has the stamped set, (non-ac, non PS). Anyone have a guess?? Thanks!

Quoting from the Bob Mannell SBF book on page 4-35 concerning the low compression 289 4Vs (i.e. D-code for Mustang only, the same engine in a Comet was their K-code!):

"On the other hand, no 289 CUBIC INCHES 4V REGULAR FUEL decals have been discovered and none are believed to have existed."

For 1965 when the 4V 289s were premium fueled the 2V 289s had tags with orange and black squares, C5ZF-9638-A, and the Mustang 4Vs had tags with white and black squares, C5ZF-9638-D. Same book, pp 5-22 & 23.

Do you think the 289ci 4V orange decal w/black & white squares was used on the D Code in 64 and they used a "289ci 4V Premium Fuel" orange decal wblack & orange sqares in 65 on the A Code?
