Default 1966 Mustang Transmission Question

I am restoring/updating a 1966 mustang. This is my first attempt at restoration although I have wanted to for years. I am converting a 1966 6cyl and plan to install a 347 stroker. I want to stay with an automatic transmission with as little modification as possible. Would it be sufficient to have the C4 that i took out of the car rebuilt with all new upgraded parts or is there another tranny that would meet my needs better. If so, can anyone give me some suggestions. I am new to the board and look forward to the whole process.

Can't use the C4 that came out of it unless you are going to rebuilt it for high performance. The 347 is no joke. You will need something to handle the power. Since your going from 6 to an 8. Have you considered a beefier rearend, Heavier duty spindle (V8 spindles), brakes upgrade and suspension upgrades. This is all a must when upping the power from 6 to 8. Hope this helps

I'm by no means an expert on trannys. That said a C4 or AOD should be able to be modified to withstand the touque of the 347.My personal opinion would be a C4 with a trans brake for drag racing and the AOD for street/track for it's overdrive/mpg. The torque converter should be upgraded either way. Maybe look at TCI. Again I am no expert. Best of luck with your project.

if your stang has the 4 lug wheel pattern change it. it is not heavy enough for the stroker. C4 is ok if you update it. but you should look for a c6. while building a f100 with a 302 boss engine the son toasted the c4 twice. it was changed out with a c6 from a crown vic with no failures in two years.
somethig eles to watch for KEEP the trans cooling lines AWAY from headers. the trans just doesn't like to be too hot
