Default 1964 Mustang Brake Pedal Removal

Any hints, warnings, or advise, on removing and reinstalling the brake pedal on a '64 coupe with auto trans.

I'm considering changing wiring harnesses from '64 to '65, which will require a new brake light switch. Anyone know exactly what the difference is, and how difficult a modification would be?

Any reason why a '65 pedal wouldn't work to replace the '64?

And, I guess since we're on the subject, does the switch mount only to the pedal?

Thanks,
Gary

Hello. First I think that I would check and see if someone has already swapped out the pedal for me.The only difference between the two is presence or absence of the little stud that the switch hooks to, so they are interchangeable. Here's how they look with the pedal mounted switch. This is a 4-speed car ( my K code) but the set-up is the same on the automatics. The only difference is that you have one pedal hanging down instead of two straddling the steering column. You just remove the clip on the p/s of the pedal bracket, knock that big pin out of there and the pedal will fall right out. Over on the d/s of the pedal is a clip that holds the switch on. You pull the clip, unplug the connector for the wires and the switch sort of rolls out off of the stud it's attached to. Hope that helps.

Is this stud an extention of what the master cylinder rod attaches too, or is it seperate?

Someone suggested that instead of changing to this new type switch, I extend the wires, of the new harness, to reach the existing switch on the master cylinder. Do you see any reason why that wouldn't work? It would still allow me to upgrade the M/C later.

Hi again. The pedal mounted brake like switch attaches to the same stud as the master cylinder rod. The problem that you might encounter is that the stud that your car might have is a little too short, causing the clip that keeps the switch and the m/c rod from sliding off to bind up and bust the switch. If you look at that picture, you can see the m/c rod going through the firewall through the rubber boot. It's kind of a snug fit with the correct stud. The additional width of the two 'ears' of the switch make it completely unworkable if you have earlier pedal. And, extending the wires out to use the m/c mounted brake light switch would not cause any problems, and could possibly eliminate the wrestling match of trying to make the pedal mounted switch work, so that might be the way to go if you are going to use the later 65 underdash harness.
