Cylinder Head valve tightness check I pulled the heads off my recently overhauled 1966, 289, 2V engine. While the heads were off, I decided to check the tightness of the intake and exhaust valves. To do this, I put in an old set of spark plugs, turned the head (combustion side up) and perfectly level. I poured a little solvent in the basin sealed off by the spark plugs and valves.
Within 5 to 10 minutes, solvent was coming out of one intake port, and within 35 minutes, solvent was coming out of 6 of the 8 intake ports. There was only a hint of a leak in a couple of the exhaust ports.
The friend I've been consulting with says the valves should hold the solvent liquid overnight without leaking. I couldn't find any additional information about this procedure on the internet.
Question - Does anyone have experience with this method for testing tightness of the valves. If so, now much leaking of the solvent can be tolerated, and still indicate sufficiently tight intake and exhaust valves.
