Default 1968 mustang 5.0 hardened distributor gear question

hello everyone. In my 1968 mustang with a 5.0 motor I have a 1973 distributor with a 1987 cap and a 1978 rotor ( think of that johnny cash song) It runs perfect.I only firerd it up for about 1 minute. My question is can I get A hardened gear for that year dist. or should I just go to a MSD or whatever? thank you all. Dave

You should be able to get a compatible distributor gear for it, just tell what kind of cam it is and you should find one without having to get a new dist.

I think FRPP (Ford Racing) sells the gears. Does the '73 dizzy have points? If so, I'd recommend a Duraspark ignition. You'll want a dizzy for an '85 5.0 HO. It's the only Duraspark unit with the hardened gear. Parts stores have 'em, but you have to double check to make sure that they do actually have the hardened gear on them, as it's a one-year-only piece, and most parts stores tend to make mistakes...
