Default 1966 Mustang T5 transmission swap/bellhousing

Hi all,
I have a 1966 Mustang Coupe. 200 straight 6 Cyl. Currently with a 3 speed manual transmission. I am about to do the T5 swap but have found in catologues that there is a kit for either a 5 bolt or a 6 bolt bellhousing. I got under the car this morning to check and could only count 4 bolts that mount the bellhousing.
Any help or suggestions.
Regards
Tony

I don't think the swap will work with a straight 6. I believe it can only be done with a 289, 302, or 351 equipped car. The 5 or 6 bolt kits are for whether you are using a T-5 Bellhousing, or the early model bellhousing.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

[QUOTE I believe it can only be done with a 289, 302, or 351 equipped car. .[/quote]

I sure hope you are wrong because I am just about ready for that T5 swap.
Correct me if I am wrong but aren't the 289,302 & 351 all 8 Cylinder engines?

I can only find the 170 and the 200 for the 1966 Mustangs to be 6 cylinder.

I have been to a couple of Mustang parts web sites ( mustangdepot , Sacramentomustang) and see that they do supply conversion kits for 6 cylinder Mustangs .
Am I reading these correctly or is my excitement missing something.
and back to my dilema, If I am reading it correctly would I have 5 or 6 bolt bellhousing . I seem to only see 4 bolts..
Thank you for taking the time to read
Tony

There should be 1 or 2 bolts at the top of the motor.

Thanks for your reply.
I can see from above the engine when I open the hood that at the top of the engine there are two bolts from the bellhousing.
When I get under the car I seem to only be able to find two more ..
( 4 in total) .
Any Ideas.

Default how to put a 302 and a t5 transmission together?

I've a 67 mustang with an inline 6 and a 3 speed manual. I want to switch thigs around and I just picked up a 302 out of a 86 gt and a guy is selling me a t5 from a 92. The 302 came with the AOD (still attached) but I want to swap to the T5. does it just bolt right on or do I have to look for something special? Thanks

can I keep the same rear end for now? it is the original so I don't know exactly what size it is. Maybe 8" with 4 lugs and drums?

TEEPEE:
As far as I know you should be able to complete a T-5 swap, i'm not sure about the # of bellhousing bolts you should have but check Mustangs Unlimited and NPD (National Parts Depot), they will probably have what you need
You may have a different bellhousing??? Not sure about that
Get out a Haynes manual, that will tell you how many bolts you have (I think)
Look out for the crossmember and miscellaneous upgrades you will need to do also

DASEIN:
Your 302 that you picked up will drop into the '67 but you will need to do a suspension upgrade, The T-5 will fit fine but you will need to make sure the T-5 is from another 302 and you will need the correct bellhousing
You CAN keep the same rear end, but your driveshaft may need to be shortened, might not need to be shortened, Look up Mustangs Unlimited for yokes, etc.
If you do any power upgrades you will want to swap rear-ends, plus you are probable geared 3.00, which, with the t-5's overdrive, will have you turning a couple hundred rpms at 60 MPH
Oh yeah, your 5.0L is a regular not an HO, you have less power stock

Thanks. As I said before I am just starting to learn about all this awesome stuff. The 302 that I have is an HO. Does that make a difference with what you said about the rear end? I don't plan to upgrade the power yet. But that will come.

actually, that 86gt motor IS an HO motor.

the chief difference between the 86 HO motor and the 87+ are the flat top pistons (forged still)...and the e6 heads. the e6 heads are the single worst heads ford ever made. Great for emissions, bad for power. Of course, that engine still makes gobs more power than an original 2v 289....200 hp vs the 60's engines, at about 150 hp for a 289 (rated in today's standards)...so it's still an easy 50+ hp gain

However, because of the flat top pistions, head swaps are often not possible without notching the pistons for reliefs.

If you do want to do an upgrade in the future, you can go with the tfs heads...as they'll work with the 86 flat top pistons.

that motor is a roller cam motor...

As for the t5, if it's from a v8 car, then the input shaft will be slightly thicker. If it's a 4 banger car, then the input shaft is thinner.

FYI, gearing on a v8 t5 is 3.35 first.

to make that t5 work with that v8, all you'll need is the pilot bearing and the bell, that's it.

if it's a 4 banger transmission, then you'll need the early 80's ford ranger diesel pilot bearing...that's the correct swap pilot bearing to use a 4 banger t5 on a v8 mustang. (use the v8 t5 bell)

while that t5 is out, now is a GREAT time to check endplay in the input shaft. Grab the input shaft and push it in and out of the trans. If it moves in and out at all, you must reshim. Play is bad, and will ruin a t5. side to side play is normal, just not in and out play.

if you must reshim, tremec.com offers the t5 manual for free. it's super easy to reshim.

v8only, you know more on this subject than I do, you're sure about the early 80's diesel pilot bearing
Why that pilot bearing and what does it change to fit into a v8??
I have and '87 5.0L and an '88 4-cyl. T-5, and I want to swap in the T-5

i'm 100% sure...I've done the swap before.

the 4 cyl input shaft is smaller than the v8 t5. because of this, if you stick it in the v8 pilot bearing, it's going to just slop around. that diesel pilot bearing is the correct one that will fit that input shaft and still tap into a 302 block.

if you search corral.net forums you may even get the part # too. it's easy though, just hit the autozone up and ask them for a pilot bearing for a ranger diesel. then go home and slip it over the shaft of that 4 banger t5 and make sure it fits (it will)...you can compare the overall size to that of the v8 t5, and you'll see the overall size is the same, so it'll fit right into that 5.0 block.

that's ALL you need for the conversion...just use the v8 bell.

keep in mind, the 4 cyl first gear is SUPER steep...I'm not sure of the gear ratio off hand, but you may want to consider that if you're going to re gear your rear.

Thanks, v8only, I got the pilot bearing but I'm not sure what bell I have, I just know it is from an 80's Ford and will fit a T-5, my rear gear is a 3.73 Positive Traction from a '95 Explorer, what a steep 1st do with this rear gear?

Give me the part # off of the bell housing...this will tell me what you've got.

the v8 t5 has a first gear ratio of 3.35 the 4 banger t5 has a first gear ratio of 3.97

You do the math, lol. It'll likely turn those gears into something more like 4.30's. First gear is gonna be over REAL soon.

It'll work though.....If it bugs you, save up for a v8 t5, and that'll drop the gear ratio some. FYI, the super high alloy gearset (t5z) internals will give you a first gear ratio of 2.95, which will drop it even more, and hold more power too. I actually buy them locally (t5z stuff)....for $365 + tax...that includes first gear,2nd, 3,4, input shaft and the cluster shaft. Pretty much everything except the main, 5th and reverse.

just giving you ideas, in case you find a v8 t5 core for cheap...you've got options. build one yourself, it's super easy. go to tremec.com and download the free t5 manual.

while we're on the subject, was that rear a direct bolt in for you???? I want to do the same to my 66. has the offset pumpkin hurt anything?

The rear was not a direct bolt in but it wasn't hard to do, I dunno about the '66 though,
Check my profile, I have pics before I put it in, I welded on spring perches and drilled a couple holes and it fits!
The Explorer's spring perches were too close together so I just welded on an extension
The only thing is that the pinion gear is partially obstructed by the passenger-side muffler, I'll probably have to move it

so I got the 302 engine now all cleaned up.I think for now I will keep the attached aod transmission that it has. later I will make it manual.

So what are the mininal modifications I have to do right now just to get the car functional with the 302 engine? It is a 67 with an inline 6 and 3 speed manual.

Can I keep the same front suspension and rear for now? what about the radiator? Also Do I need the computer that came out of the donor 86 gt?
