Default 1966 Coupe - Restore vinyl top or paint? Opinions please!

Hi! My car used to have a vinyl top. Whoever owned it before me removed the vinyl and painted the whole car the same color. I'm preparing to repaint and I'm wondering what you guys think!! Note: the trim pieces on the upper part of the quarter panel that separate the vinyl area from the paint are still there and are in decent condition.

By the way, my car has a lip around the driver and passenger windows about 3/8 inch wide. Is this because of the vinyl top or do all cars have this?

Let me know what you think!!
Thanks,
Bryan

Hey Shum, do you mean the 3/8 lip for the drip moulding? If so all cars have it. I know mine does. If so it gets a clip on piece molded to fit (a bear to get on, just ask me). As far as whether or not to revinyl it that depends on if you like the vinyl look and taking the extra time to re-do it. If done right it looks really nice but remember it takes upkeep too to stay nice. Painting would be easier. Look at pictures of both close up and decide. You might also want to look into the revinyling process and what it involves. Hope that helped somewhat.

Pianting would be easier. Do you want want easy or do you want original and unique?
Some would say a vinyl top is a rust trap, but that is due to many neglected mustangs developing rust under the old tops. A garaged and properly installed vinyl top will last for years. I am biased and I vote for the top.

Unlike sportystang, I hate vinyl tops. I helped a friend remove one off his Torino, and I have removed mine off of my '73 (it was avacado green)

It takes a lot of time to get new vinyl on right. You have a nice looking car though. If it were mine, I would paint the top and leave the molding!! It gives it character.

Unless you are going for a show car.

I think that vinyl takes away from the sporty classic look. It was mostly the luxury cars that got the vinyl back then, and a classic mustang is certainly not a luxury car. I would keep the painted top.
