Default 1969 Mustang power steering replacement

I just replaced the power steering control valve and power cylinder in my 69 Mustang. To my disappointment it is leaking from the threads of the short hoses that go between the control valve and the cylinder. I have tightened them as much as I can. Does anyone have any suggestions? (is there a special compound to put on the threads? do I need new hoses as well? is it a futile effort? )

There are tapered seats in the bottom of the ports in the control valve. There is also a tapered seating area on the hose fittings . The hoses do not seal by the threads like a pipe fitting would so applying pipe sealant may work for a short time, but is not the correct way. There has to be no nicks or damage or trash in the seats. You will have to inspect these areas. To my knowledge the seats are a pressed in piece in the ports of the control valve and are not available separately.

Too much torque applied to the hose fittings when installing will distort this seat and make a deep circular groove into the tapered raised portion. I have seen rebuilt control valves with bad seats right out of the box. If I were not concerned about originality brand new valves are now on the market and is the way I would go.

I ditched my power steering because of the lack of quality rebuilt components. This was before the new stuff became available. I kind of miss it, but the constant leak problem was just too much for me.---Chuck
