Default Motor mount spacer - opinions please

Has anyone every used washers to shim the motor mounts on their car? Do you think it will cause any mount concerns?

Background:
I have an early 66 fastback with 65 style motor mounts. I've installed a 351 Windsor based engine in my car and have about 1/2 inch clearance between the aircleaner and the hood.

I am running into some interference between my headers and the shock towers and need to raise the engine a bit. Going to 66 style motor mounts will raise the engine about an inch, causing my air cleaner to hit the hood. I really don't want to modify the hood as I I've gone through a lot of trouble keeping the car a sleeper.

As I only need a quarter inch, I was thinking of using something similar to a fender washer between the frame rail mount and the motor mount.

Default Washers

I'd be cautious doing this. A washer (even a fender washer) is usually a lot smaller surface area than the bottom of the mount. This will leave space for the mounts (and engine) to rock, particularly under load.

If you elect to do this, make some spacers out of 1/4" stock that is at least as large as the base of the mounts. I'd consider welding them to the mounts if you can.

Sounds like good advice Tripleblack. I'll fabricate some rectangular spacers.

Make sure to check the drive shaft angles after raising the engine. Don't forget that drop base air cleaner housings are available if you need more room for the hood to clear.---Chuck

Definitely use 1/4 plate or bar stock for spacers I'm in the process of making 1" ones for the jeep useing this method Use grade 8 bolts if you need longer ones

another option-I've seen headers made especially for this swap. With them you could keep the engine as low as possible in the bay.they claim to have the clearance you need
