Default Question about 93 Cobra motor in 66 coupe

Well it seems the "crate motor" in my recently acquired 66 Coupe is really a Ford Factory rebuilt 5.0 from a 93 Cobra.
The part number on the block is for a rebuilt long block for a 93 Cobra.
I've been calling Ford & Motorcraft and no one can tell me much about this motor.
Is this a good combo to use with a carb in the old car?
I'm wondering about the cam mainly. Is it a profile for a FI car & will it work OK with the Edelbrock & Holley 600CFM on it now?
The car is sluggish, but I thought that was the C4 and/or the stock 2.80 gears. Now I'm wondering if the motor is not performing as well as it could right now.
I guess it has the GT-40 heads but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure the Cobra did, so this motor should have the same thing.
I've been trying to find specs on the cam but no luck yet.
I can change the cam if I need to, so it would be more compatable with the carb setup.
Then again, maybe it's fine & I'm worrying about nothing.
Any ideas or info will be appreciated.

Make sure you have the hardened distributor gear to work with the roller cam.

Check out Fletch's carburated 5.0 Mustang site at www.jason.fletcher.net. He has the specs for the 93-94 Cobra camshaft listed.

I am running the crate GT-40, 5.0 engine in my 67. It has a B-303 camshaft which was designed for fuel injection and it works fine with the 600 CFM Holley and Weiand Stealth intake I have installed. Had to go with a 2400 RPM stall torque converter with my B&M C4 trans. because of the higher idle speed this cam requires. Ford Racing has a E-303 cam which has better street manners and is 50 state legal for emission purposes. It develops its torque at a lower RPM than the B-303.

Some cams will not produce power until higher RPMs thus making the engine seem slugish until then. This may be your problem.

For God's sake change out that highway 2.80 rear gear and put a 3.25 to 3.50 gear in it. Should make a big difference. It'll change the whole personality of your car.

As for a quick ID of the GT40 heads, look for 3 vertical bars cast into the front and rear of the heads with "GT" cast into one of the corners. The GT40P heads have 4 vertical bars with "GTP" on the corners.

Keep the cam you have and change the rear gears first and go from there. That's my recommendation, if you don't only drive on the highway. I've got a 3.50 gear in mine and I love the acceleration ability it gives me and I can still drive it one the highway.

Check out Fletch's site it has a bunch of good info.---Chuck

I agree with "Greek". 3.50 gears min. I would go with the holley street avenger 670 CFM electronic choke. I have not bought mine yet, but I plan on it since I have a holley 750 CFM with a Proform body which I hear takes it up to 850 CFM, it wastes too much fuel so I imagine a 670 CFM I will gain on the low end and lose on the high end.
Is the cobra engine considered a 351? I have a 351 W stroked to a 383 with 3.73 gears and she flies.
