Default Street Race?

I recently bought a 69 Mustang that needs minor work.

I want to make the car a street race (drag) car.

It has a 302ci engine in it and I am thinking of replacing
the rear end with a 3:91 ratio.

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice or links to web pages that will basically tell me what I could do
to make it good on the 1/4.

I'm just recently getting into cars so I've still got alot
to learn.

Anyways,I'd REALLY appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance!

First I would make a plan and decide how fast I would want to run. This will also help you decide how much money it would take. Is the body in excellent rust free condition? Otherwise alot of cash can be spent here patching things up. If it is really rusted out it would not be wise to continue but find a car in better shape.
Find out and make a list on what you want for a motor, transmission, rear end, exhaust, brakes etc and stick to a plan. Do you want to stay original or not. These are questions you have to answer first before buying anything. Good Luck Frank..

Frank
The car has some minor surface rust.
As for how fast I want the car to go,
I'd like it to do low 10's or even 9s.

I don't care if the car stays original or not,
but I would like to use the 302 that I've got
for it.

As for the other things, that's why I posted
here.

I'm asking, what kind of things could I do
to the car to make it a decent drag/street
race car?

Thanks!

9's and 10's is a steep order for a 69 with a 302, but it can be done. I would also consider focusing on weight reduction for the car. Such as a fiberglass hood, trunck, and maybe bumpers. Nothing really fancy, but a few hundred pounds of weight loss can make the car much faster. Little tricks like moving the battery to the trunk, suspension setup, etc. all add up.

The engine and gearing are of course a major focus, but many times people focus on only on them.

I would also work towards a proven engine combination that many performance engine parts companies sell. This is great way to take the guess work out of putting the right parts combination together.

I'm with Glen on this one, goin' 10's or 9's will take alot of horsepower to accomplish especially from a 302. You might want to consider a stroker set up with a power adder to get you there. Also needed is a bullet proof drivetrain. Your leaf spring suspension is a good foundation for going fast but you might have to go to a back halved four link to keep her straight.
Also to consider in the cost is the safety requirements, proper roll cage, scatter shield, drivers seat, seat belts etc...
You can do it Nathan but it won't be cheap!! This might be a long term project over the years. Good luck to ya' Frank..

I know I'm new here (just made my first post tonight)....but I have a '69 with a 302....I put a Holley 600cfm carb, medium rise intake, and changed from the stock 2.73 ratio to a 3.25.....I can't get the dang thing to hook up *lol*.....I still have the stock 14" rims...and am running the largest tires I can on the back (235/65/14).....(btw, it's a C-4 automatic).....when I punch it....all it does is spin.....something I was told to try, you might have luck with it too, is to go to an 80/20 or even a 90/10 front shock.......good luck *smile* (if I'm off base, someone please let me know)

Default 1969 A.S.A.P.

I built a 1969 Mustang Fastback, you will need to stroke a 351W to a 408CID W/208 intake valved heads, fully ported, with Victor Jr. intake manifold. 9" rear-end W/ 4:30 gears W/ 31 or 32 spline axles, with around a 306 duration cam ( of corse roller) roller rockers, with a min. of 11 1/2 compression. Auto trans. 3500 or 4,000 stall torque converter C-4 trans. complete w/shift kit. Plus GUT the Car with only a drivers seat, complete roll cage, racing fuel cell ( gas Tank) Plexey glass side and rear glass. So I guess you have about 20,000.00 to spend??
