Default ?? Engines ??

Would it be better to rebuild the 302 that I have
or buy one that someone has already re-built/built up?

Thanks!

Two ways to look at it.
1: Rebuild it yourself and know for sure what's inside.
2: Buy one already done, not know what's inside, but possibly take advantage of someone who is short on cash. This way it is possible to get better parts for less money.

If you buy someones motor spend the time and money to take it apart and measure everything and make sure you get what you paid for.Should cost you some gaskets and time ,that way you don't install it and on start up it knocks or something in those lines

I'm a mustang fan, but I know little about restoring them. I recently bought a 1979 mustang. I looked up the vin number and it says its a 5.0. is there any difference between a 5.0 and a 302? or is that a dumb question and there is no difference? I'm asking because I think the original engine has been replaced. It still has a 302 in it. Guys I'm new to the mustang arena so if you could take it easy on my if its a dumb question. Id hate to put a 5.0 emblem on my ride and be wrong. also through a couple of people who knows about the car they said the engine is from a 68 and might be a boss, how can I tell?
If you have any information please e-mail me at r4cookies@juno.com.

A 5.0 is a 302. 302 is in cubic inches, 5.0 is it's metric equivilant.(actually 4.9 if you want to be technical about it)
How would you know it it is a boss 302??? The eaisest way is to find someone who can decifer a 302 from a boss 302. In a physical size the boss is a bit bigger looking.
Boss 302 are a rare find and to have someone stick it into a '79 Mustang althought possible, in my opionion , would be highly unlikely. Frank

The easiest way to till a Boss 302 block, while it is still in the car, is to look at the soft or freeze plugs on the side of the block.

If they are knock out type then it is NOT a Boss block. Boss 302 blocks have large screw-in plugs with a 4-sided recess for a tool to unscrew them. With the oil pan off you could see the main caps. A Boss block will have 4 bolts on each cap instead of just 2

Boss 302's are from 1969-70 so unless someone put the block in the 68 it would not be a Boss block

To tell if it is a boss, look at the Valve covers, if there are 8 retaining screws it is a clevland head, which is a boss 302 head, the normal windsor 302 heads have only 6 reatining screws, fastest way to tell.

Default I need Help!!!

Sorry guys but I'll probably be asking a few dumb questions, Im new to this whole mustang thing but share the same love of mustangs as you guys do. First Question is I just placed a rebuilt 302 in my 1968 Mustang and was wondering if I have to follow a certain procedure or run the engine at a certain rpm when starting it the first time? Second question is I just placed disc brakes on the rear and front of my Mustang and need a set of wheels that will fit perfectly!! I've seen other Mustangs with 17 in rims that are 8 in wide, has anyone have any experience in wheels will fit perfectly without the rims hitting the controll arms? By the way Im new to this site and also new to the whole mustang thing. Im building my 1968 Mustang coupe, originally a inline six with a 3 speed tranny, which I've had since I was 15 and have done many conversions such as, a 302 conversion, T5 trany conversion, and also converted all the drum brakes to Wilwood dis brakes, now I just need to piece the small things to get it running!!! thanks guys

If you go with a hydralic cam and lifters, you run it at 3k for 20 minutes. Solids are start and go. 17" wheels fit better than 16", and there's no interference with the UCA. Click on the Mustang at this site, and it will let you see different combo's people are using.
