Default 9" rear brake conversion on 65 mustang

Does anyone know about the early Ford Early Explorer brake conversion for a 9" rear end. I am interested in doing this conversion. Do you have to have 31 spline axles? Any information you guys have out there would be helpful. Thanks

Good question! I myself am not familiar with the early Ford Explorer conversion you mention. Any chance of providing a few more details. There are a number of guys on our forum very familiar with the Ford 9" rear end. Hopefully one or more of them can help you out.

You can also try Marlo's Frame and Alignment. Don't let the name fool you. Marlo's shop actually specializes in classic mustang restoration and performance. If you send Marlo an email, there is a good chance he can help with your question. Here's the link to his site.

Hope this is of some help.

Here is a site where someone has done this swap. I have a Versailles rear end for sale if you are interested.

First requirement for the Explorer rear disc swap is to have a large axle bearing rear end housing (Most early Mustangs do not have large bearing housings --they are medium bearing housings).

Second requirement is 3/8" diameter housing end flange bolts (where the stock drum brake backing plates bolt to the housing ends). Not ½" diameter like is found on most large axle bearing housings.
The mounting pattern must be 2" vertically x 3.56" horizontally for the Explorer swap. Most vintage Mustang's end flange bolt pattern is 2" vertically x 2-3/8" horizontally.

Third requirement is the axle must have a minimum distance of 2.088" from the wheel flange of the axle to the start of the bearing journal surface on the axle. Most vintage Mustangs fall into the 2.090" range.

There is an alternative to the Explorer and Versailles rear disc swap though:
