I am having problems getting my fuel sending unit to send to the fuel gauge. Both the gauge and the sending unit have been tested out of the tank and work. With the sending unit out of the tank and hooked up with sending wire and ground wire to the frame, it works the gauge. Put the unit back in the tank and it doesn't work. Had an extra sending unit and hooked it up out of the tank and grounded it to the center of the new sending unit in the tank and it made the gauge work. Have checked the tank to be sure it is grounded and even ran a ground wire from the battery ground post to the tank , but it didn't make a difference. Any help will be appreciated.
Hello Charley
Sorry but I am a little confused here -it is late.
I can offer you a few tips as your set up is the same as
our 70 Mach.
I think you are real close to finding the issue.
Here is what I would do.
1. - Take the "hot" feed off the sending unit and ground it to
a good ground source. If the gauge goes all the way to full
that is great - -PLEASE - do NOT leave it grounded long
not good for the IVR- (instrument voltage regulator.
If the gauge reads full - -that tells you the gauge is working
and making a connection at the dash.
This leads you to the fault being the sender itself.
I am thinking you have a defective sending unit
Try this and let us know
Sorry gotta run
