I've had my 65 coupe for about a year and a half now, and knew from the start that the 3-speed vent fan didn't work (it's near the bottom of the list of things I need to fix). Well I was sitting at a red light today and started playing with the fan switch for no particular reason, when all of a sudden it started blowing air. It only worked at the third/far-right setting, and not consistently (meaning if i turn it off and then back to that third setting, it only sometimes comes back to life). Any ideas what's wrong with it?
Could be a number of things. Likely it is the fan resistor in the wall of the heater box. It has two coils that slow the motor at the first two settings. Could be the switch is just nasty and the contacts don't work well. Last it could be the heater box is full of junk like leaves coming in from the vents.
I would vote for dirty switch contacts. The resistors are not used on the High setting which I think is the one where it worked for you. On the other settings it could be either switch contacts or resistors.
