Default Ignition wire stopped getting power

Yesterday, out of no where, my mustang would not start, turned over and all but was not getting spark.. i traced the problem back to the pink "resistor" wire comming from the firewall that goes into the ignition.. that wire is not getting power and is connected to my duraspark ignition. what could the problem be here? what voltage does that wire run on, because when i hook up the duraspark to a regular 12v source the car starts but when you add gas it seems to bog down a little

The pink resistor wire goes from the ignition switch to the coil (with the factory tach in there, iif you have one). At the switch there should be 1`2 volts. the current runs from the switch (12V0 through the resistor wire (under the dash, from 12 V to approx 6V), then through the firewall (6V) onto the coil(6V). If you checked the voltage on the engine side of the firewall it should be about 6V.
Two thoughts---
1) are you sure the resistor wire is still in the circuit and still operative? Over the years it may have been removed and replaced with an unresistored wire, which would deliver 12V to the duraspark.
2) regardless of this, I don't see a reason for the car to bog down due to this issue. AFAIK, it will either run, or not. If you have an issue bogging down, it probably isn't the fault of that wire.
Hope that helps.

Hmm, thank you for the reply and the help...
I had the duraspark connected to the pink resistor wire and the engine ran great, then yesterday it would not start, no spark, i connected the duraspark wire to another 12v source, which was connected to the pink resistor wire, and the engine started, but is boging down under gas.. this is what leads me to believe the reason for the bogging down is because of the voltage, unless by coincidence something else went wrong when this wire stopped getting power... any other thoughts are very welcome, thank you again

Sounds like you may have a bad coil, or a bad built in resistor,
if the coil has built in resistor it will be marked on the coil. Like
external resistor needed, or with resistor. With built in coil resistor , should read 12V at the + terminal on the coil, then coil
resistor reduces to around 6 volts, but you wont be abler to measure this current. Some of the dura-sparks had bypass wire
that fed 12V from solenoid during start, then feeds from ignition
run position. Hope this helps

Hmm i checked out the coil, does not read anywhere that it has a built in resistor.. i might end up replacing the coil to try it out

Anyone know what resistor i should replace the old one in the pink ignition wire with ?

The pink resistor wire was used for the old points system where you wouldn't burn the points up. Just bypass it with a regular wire to get a full 12 volts to your Duraspark.

In fact you can use the TFI coil without a resistor, which is about 40,00 volts, and the ole DuraSpark will lite up. Much better idle and more spark. No Voltage resistor. You will need to use the wide MSD cap for more efficent spark and no more cap jumping. A good mod for the Dura-Spark, have to use different
post type ignition wires.
