Default 351windsor horsepower

I have a 69 mustang with a 351w, and am just beginning to upgrade it. so far it has a new intake manifold, 4 barrel carb, headers/dual exaust, ignition (not hei), polygraphite suspension and k&n filter. what do you suggest i do next? ive read in the posts about gears...would this help performance significantly ( i have an FMX automatic tranny)? Thank you for any suggestions.

Chris

A cam and/or heads would be a nice addition

If possible loose the FMX and replace it with a C4. The FMX does not shift very well, has almost no available aftermarket parts, and is very very heavy. The C4 has many parts available, and is lighter. Gears are the best option, and with the 9" rear axle in your car they are easy to install and set up. Plus, there are many more optional gear ratios available for the 9"

i am looking at the c4 at performanceautomatic.com. any opinions? what would i have to change to put a c4 in instead of the fmx? the torque converter...bellhousing? do i have to shorten the driveshaft? i would like to know whats involved before planning this whole thing. who knows mabye i could do it myself if its a simple bolt on replacement.

thanks again,

chris

You have probavly finished this project but depending upon how much freeway driving you do I put 3.75s and a Detroit Locker in mine. If you have lots of freeway driving drop to 3.55s or 3.25s.

changing the gearing will allow to 3.5 or 3.75 etc will allow you to acellerate quicker as you generally have more torque availible at higher revs the downside is you use more fuel and have more engine wear.A good compromise would be a 4 speed overdrive trans with 3.5 rear end as for the engine cam then a little head work or if you can streach some new heads GT40's are suposed to be quite good.

dude if you have the time switch the tranny to a borg warner t-5 i just got done doing that to my 70 mach 1 and it is the best thing i have ever done to it..... i had an fmx in it before and it wasnt too painful considering there are many guides on the internet to show you step by step how to do it and what parts to get there is no other way to go
